Box Score

SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino closed out the 2010 regular season in style scoring the second most runs in a game this season in a 17-9 win over Grand Canyon.

The Coyotes (29-15) pounded out 20 hits in the season finale as Erik Ornelas went 5-for-6 with a pair of RBIs and four runs scored. Cody Madison went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Bryant Veiga drove in three runs and scored three runs while going 3-for-4. James Kono also had a 3-for-4 day at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

Grand Canyon looked to be off to the start it got the day before when Tyler Bair hit a solo home run to left field to take a 1-0 lead, but the Coyotes tied it in the bottom half on a Veiga single to right center to score Ornleas. After a Kono single loaded the bases, Julio Torres cleared them with a double that blooped into left field to put CSUSB up 4-1.

CSUSB added three more in the second on a sacrifice fly by Madison and a two-run home run by Veiga, his eighth of the year, to make it 7-1.

The Lopes walked three of the first four batters in the third as Brent Planck and Ornelas had an RBI single before Madison ripped a double down the left field line to add two more. Ryan Hulbert made it a 13-1 game with a double to right center.

Ornelas hit his sixth home run of the year in the bottom of the fifth to put the Coyotes up 14-1. Kono then singled up the middle to score Veiga from third to make it 15-1.

The Lopes scored four runs in the top of the seventh to make it 15-5, but a two-run home run by Drew Peterson in the bottom half of the inning, his first of the year, pushed CSUSB out to a 17-5 advantage.

GCU added a run in the seventh and four more in the ninth to close it to 17-9, but the Coyotes closed out the regular season with a win.

Brandon Cunniff (8-2) picked up the win, throwing the first six innings giving up just one run on four hits.

CSUSB now will get set for the CCAA Championships, May 6-8. Seedings and game times should be announced next week.
