POMONA — Brandon Cunniff tossed his first complete game of the season as he allowed just five hits and struck out four in a 6-0 win over Cal Poly Pomona.
Cunniff also walked just one batter as the Coyotes (20-12, 19-11) won their second straight game over the Broncos (19-20, 11-15) and have won three of their last four. Four of Cal Poly Pomona's hits came in the second and third innings with two in each inning. The senior allowed just one hit the rest of the way. He walked the second batter of the ninth, but then induced a double play to end the game and moved to 5-2 on the year.
Cody Madison went 3-for-5 on the day with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Julio Torres was 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Brent Planck went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Erik Ornleas and Bryant Veiga each had a 2-for-5 day at the plate with Veiga scoring a run.
After two scoreless innings to start the day, CSUSB got on the boarding the third when Torres scored on a Bronco error to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead. Cal State San Bernardino added three more in the fifth to lead 4-0. Madison drove in Torres for the first run of the inning with a single to left before Andrew Harrison singled through the right side to score Madison. Ryan Hulbert drove in the final run of the inning with a single to left.
Madison then singled to right in the sixth to put CSUSB up 5-0 before an Ethan Chapman sacrifice fly to left in the eighth scored Planck for the final run of the game.
The Coyotes look to complete the four-game sweep Saturday when they host Cal Poly Pomona in a noon doubleheader at Fiscalini Field.
