Box Score
POMONA — Most coaches say that late in the season freshmen become sophomores as they have finally stepped into a routine. How about a freshman that plays more like an all-conference pick? Cal State San Bernardino's
Ethan Chapman hit his 10th home run of the season and went 3-for-5 with three RBIs, two runs scored and was just a triple short of the cycle in a 6-4 win over Cal Poly Pomona.
Chapman doubled in his first at bat, hit a three-run shot to right field in his second and then singled in his third. He came into the week just a home run shy of the California Collegiate Athletic Association lead and could very well have it before the series end. It was also the eighth straight game he recorded a hit, just two shy of the season-high of 10 set by
Matt Winn.
The Coyotes (19-12, 18-11 CCAA) scored five of their six runs and had five of their 10 hits in the first two innings.
CSUSB got off to a quick start with the first five batters of the game reaching base. Chapman doubled to lead off the game before
Erik Ornelas singled to left to drive home Chapman.
Cody Madison reached on a fielder's choice and then was caught stealing before
Bryant Veiga walked.
Darren Dworak gave the Coyotes a 2-0 lead with a single to score Veiga.
The Broncos answered in the bottom of the first with a two-run home run by Jenzen Torres to tie the game.
James Kono walked to lead off the second before
Brent Planck pushed him to second with a sacrifice bunt.
Julio Torres walked to put runners at first and second before Chapman cleared the bases with the three-run bomb that gave CSUSB a 5-2 lead. The Broncos got a run back in the bottom half of the inning with a sac fly to center to make it 5-3.
Neither team scored again until Pomona added one run in the bottom of the seventh to get within one at 5-4, but a Planck single in the eighth gave CSUSB a 6-4 lead and just enough room for
Andrew Schile to record his eighth save of the year as he tossed the final inning of play.
Sophomore
Aaron Brooks moved to 5-1 on the year after throwing the first 6 1/3 innings, allowing just four runs while scattering 11 hits.
Planck went 2-for-3 with an RBI while Ornelas was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
The two play again tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. before concluding the season series Saturday with a noon doubleheader at Fiscalini Field in San Bernardino.
