SAN BERNARDINO — Erik Ornelas hit a three-run home run and an RBI triple to lead Cal State San Bernardino to a 6-5 win over No. 15 Sonoma State, Friday at Ficsalini Field.
The junior went 2-for-4 with four RBIs and a two runs scored as the Coyotes (5-1, 5-0 CCAA) won their fifth straight and remain undefeated in conference play. The last time the Coyotes started this hot on the season was in 1998 when they went 9-1 to start the conference season when the CCAA included UC Riverside which is now in the Big West.
Ethan Chapman and Chris LeFay also went 2-for-4 while Chapman scored a pair of runs. The first six batters in the lineup for CSUSB all recorded hits. Aaron Brooks (2-1) picked up his second straight win after allowing just two runs while scattering nine hits in seven innings of work. Andrew Schile notched his third save of the year, throwing the final inning, allowing one run on three hits.
Sonoma State took the first lead of the game, breaking a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth, but a Cody Madison single drove in Bryant Veiga to tie the game at 1-1.
The Seawolves took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth, but CSUSB answered again with three runs in the fifth. Kyle Davis started the rally with a two-out single to right center that was followed by a single by Chapman to put runners at first and second. Ornelas cleared the bases with his first home run of the season that put the Coyotes up 4-2.
CSUSB tacked on two more runs in the seventh with Ornelas' triple that drove in Chapman and Ornelas scored on a Matthew Winn single to take a 6-2 lead.
Sonoma State scored two runs in the eighth and added one in the ninth, but Schile was able to work out of a jam, allowing just the single run.
The two teams are scheduled for an 11 a.m. doubleheader tomorrow.
