Box Score

SEASIDE — After scoring just one run on four hits through the first four innings of play, Cal State San Bernardino unloaded in the final five innings with 11 hits and 15 runs in a 16-1 win over Cal State Monterey Bay.

The Coyotes (1-1, 1-0 CCAA) pick up their first win of the season and open California Collegiate Athletic Association play with a win. Aaron Brooks nearly went the distance for CSUSB as the sophomore tossed eight innings, allowing just one run on seven hits. He also fanned six batters before Carlos Nakamura closed the game, striking out one in one inning of work.

The Otters (1-5, 0-1 CCAA) actually scored the first run of the game in the bottom of the third and held that lead until Erik Ornelas, who went 3-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored, drove home Kyle Davis with single up the middle in the top of the fifth.

That was just the first of many runs for the Coyotes.

CSUSB added two more in the top of the sixth when Bryant Veiga scored on a ground out and Leland Sisco crossed the plate on an Otter error to put the Coyotes up 3-1. Ornelas scored the first of four runs in the seventh when Sisco singled up the middle and then Darren Dworak drove in a pair with a single. Chris LeFay brought home Julio Torres for the final run of the inning with a fielder's choice.

After taking a 7-1 lead in the seventh, the Coyotes took a 9-1 lead in the eighth, including a solo home run from Matthew Winn. CSUSB added more than just a little insurance in the ninth, scoring seven runs. Six of those runs came from the 7, 8 and 9-spots. Brent Planck drove in a pair of runs with a single up the middle before LeFay launched a three-run bomb to left center. James Kono then stepped to the plate and delivered a solo home run to left for the second straight round tripper.

Of the 14 batters that had a plate appearance, 12 recorded a base hit. Veiga went 2-for-2 on the day with four runs scored while LeFay drove in four runs and Dworak brought home three.

Brooks notched his first win of the year, moving to 1-0 on the young season.

The same two teams will take part in a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m. before closing out the series Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.
