Klug's hit in 9th gives Coyotes a 6-5 victory

Team now 6-1 after Saturday night's win over Colo. State-Pueblo

CSUSB Coach Don Parnell watches intently from dugout area.
Senior Jason Klug tripled home Johnnie Haas in the bottom of the ninth inning Saturday night to give Cal State San Bernardino a 6-5 non-conference baseball victory over Colorado State-Pueblo at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
The win improved the Coyotes to 6-1 on the season while the Thunderwolves -- who beat Cal Poly Pomona, 8-5, earlier in the day, are now 2-1.
Klug drove in three of the Coyotes' six runs with a pair of hits as CSUSB rallied from a 4-1 deficit to take the lead, 5-4, with a four-run seventh inning only to have the Thunderwolves tie the game in the top of the eighth.
The other hero on the night for CSUSB was right-fielder Andrew Tapia. After the 'Wolves Ryan Wager singled to right with runners on second and third in the eighth, pinch runner John Kennedy scored the tying run to make it 5-5 but pinch-hitter Nick McLaughlin was thrown out at the pate on a one-hop throw from Tapia to catcher Chris LeFay who tagged McLaughlin as he slid in head first.
CSUSB's closer Ward Minich picked up the win after coming out of the bullpen with two out in the top of the ninth to get the final out and preserve the tie for Klug's heroics. Minich is now 1-0. The loser was former San Bernardino Valley College right-hander Ian O'Connor who gave up Haas' single before being relieved by Jesus Hernandez. Klug's game-winning hit followed.
Earlier, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the fourth on an RBI single by Drew Valenzuela of 'Wolves starter Joe Proto, another former SBVC pitcher. Coyotes starter Kevin Wilson was sailing along until the sixth when Thomas Cordova tripled and scored on a single by Johnny Zepeda for a 1-1 tie.
The 'Wolves then took the lead, 4-1, with three runs in the seventh aided by an RBI triple by Rutger Bovard, a Coyotes error and an RBI single by Jon Proesl. Two of the runs were unearned.
CSUSB regained the lead with four runs in the home half of the inning. With the bases loaded, O'Connor came on in relief of Chris Garcia and Klug greeted him with a two-run single to right. Kyle Walton followed with a double to left center that scored two more runs to make it 5-4 CSUSB.
The Coyotes will host Pomona Pitzer at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Arrowhead Credit Union Park.
