TURLOCK — No. 30 Cal State Dominguez Hills scored one run in the bottom of the eighth to just edge No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino, 3-2, Friday in a California Collegiate Athletic Association Contest.

Brandon Cunniff had allowed just two runs on seven hits heading into the eighth inning. That's when Kevin Pillar led off the inning with a solo home run to center field to give the Toros (17-9, 12-7) a one-run lead that it held to take the season series to 1-1 with the Coyotes (15-8, 15-7 CCAA).

Cunniff came into the game undefeated at 3-0, but couldn't get any more run support after CSUSB took a 2-0 lead early in the game.

Cal State San Bernardino scored the first two runs of the game in the top of the second on three straight singles with two outs. Chris LeFay hit the first one before James Kono drove in Ryan Hulbert and Brent Planck scored LeFay to give the Coyotes a 2-0 lead.

The Toros answered in the bottom of the fifth on a pair of doubles by Dean Benavidez and Carlos Leyva to tie it at 2-2.

That set the stage for Pillar with the game-winning home run.

Nine different Coyotes recorded hits with Kono leading the way going 2-for-4 with an RBI. Lucas Sanford came on in relief for Cunniff, allowing two hits in one inning of work.

Shane Youngdale (2-3) nearly threw a complete game for the Toros, going 8.1 innings. He allowed just two runs while scattering eight hits. Matt Phillips picked up his fifth save of the year, tossing the final two-thirds of the game.

The two teams will close the four game series Saturday with a 12 p.m. doubleheader in San Bernardino.
