CCAA Championship awaits Coyotes Cross Country

CSUSB competes Saturday at Whittier

Head Coach Tom Burleson will take his Coyotes Cross Country team to Whittier for the CCAA Championships on Saturday.
Postseason cross country has arrived as the Cal State San Bernardino women's team is set to compete at the CCAA Championships scheduled for Saturday at Whittier Narrows Regional Park.

The Coyotes ran at the venue Oct. 23 as Cal Poly Pomona hosted the Bronco Preview Meet at the 6,000-meter layout.

Head Coach Tom Burleson says his team is set and the familiarity of running the park will be a definite asset when they compete Saturday.

“The girls found that the course is flat and fast and that bodes well,'' he said. “They liked it and that's always a good thing. We got the bugs out.''

The Coyotes placed third two weeks ago and finished just 11 points behind title-winning Cal State Stanislaus.

“I think it's highly possible that we can have a top five team on Saturday,'' he said. “Our top three are within seconds of one another and our 4 and 5 are not that far behind.''

Burleson gives the nod to Chico State with Cal Poly Pomona to finish second. “But I think you have Cal State Stanislaus, Cal State L.A., UC San Diego and us that will be in the mix for 3 through 5,'' he said.

“We just need everyone to do their job and if that's so, we'll have a successful day.''

The Coyotes are led by junior Katherine Gomez (Riverside) and sophomores Samantha Borman (Redlands) and Rebekah Frazier (San Bernardino).

Gomez owns four top-10 finishes this season and Borman has finished inside the top seven in the last three races including winning the CSUSB Invite at Glen Helen in early October.

Frazier ran strong at Whittier two week ago with her first top-five finish.

“Rebekah didn't compete for four weeks, but she has run well in her time back,'' Burleson said. “Katherine is ready as well. She learned well from her run and Samantha has been so competitive this fall.''

Sophomore Niki Chesnut (San Bernardino) was 17th at Whittier for CSUSB's fourth runner and Anjuli Nieto (Wrightwood) placed 30th.

The Coyotes also will compete later this month at the NCAA West Regionals, held at Western Washington University in Bellingham, Wash., on Nov. 20.
