Coyotes slip past Sonoma St. women, 58-52

Ooten leads CSUSB with 20 points, 13 rebounds; Cal Poly Pomona next

      Cal State San Bernardino, down 14-3 early in the first half, forged a 20-17 halftime lead and went on to defeat Sonoma State 58-52 Saturday night in a CCAA conference women's basketball game before 225 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
    Junior forward Kymberly Ooten led the Coyotes with 20 points and 13 rebounds while leading scorer Krystal Urzua finished with 10 points, five rebounds and four steals. CSUSB is now 7-4 on the season and 3-3 in the CCAA.
    Nadia Williams and Kelsey Wagner came off the bench to lead Sonoma State with 10 points apiece as the Seawolves suffered their second straight road loss in a close game, following Friday's 48-46 loss at Cal Poly Pomona. The Seawolves are now 5-8 overall and 3-5 in the CCAA.
    Neither team shot the ball well. The Coyoes were 18 of 58 for 31 percent while the Seawolves were 18 of 58 also for the same percentage. CSUSB was six of 22 from three-point range while Sonoma was four of 21. However, the Coyotes made 16 of 19 free throws including six of six in the final minute to take the game.
    The Coyotes will travel to Cal Poly Pomona on Tuesday night for a CCAA contest at 5:30 p.m.
    CSUSB was down 9-0 in the first five minutes and trailed 14-3 with 13:13 left in the first half on a three-pointer by former CSUSB forward Stephanie Barnes. However, Ooten responded with a jumper 11 seconds later and the Coyotes outscored SSU 17-3 over the final 13 minutes of the half.
    The Coyotes grabbed an eight-point lead at 29-21 on a three-pointer by Urzua and led by nine at 32-23 on a free throw by Shannon Gholar with 15:11 left. Gholar than nailed a three-pointer for a 10-point lead at 35-25.
    After Ooten's layup with 11:10 left put the Coyotes up by 11 at 41-30, Sonoma State began to chip away and tied the game at 46-all on a layup by Wagner with 3:40 left in the game. Wagner then put the Seawoles in front 48-46 with a jumper but Lisa Takata tied the game with a pair of free throws at the 2:58 mark.
    After Oly Larkin put Sonoma up 49-48 with a charity toss, Urzua made two free throws for a 50-49 CSUSB lead with 2:21 left. Wagner responded with a layup to put SSU back in front 51-49 with 1:55 to play. Then, Emily Vore rebounded a missed shot by Urzua and hit a 10-foot jumper in the lane to put CSUSB back up 52-51. 
    Jaclyn Bisorzi tied the game at 52-all making one of two free throws but then fouled Vore at the other end and Vore sank both free throws with 37 seconds left to give CSUSB a 54-52 edge.  Takata rebounded a missed shot by Larkin and was fouled and made both free throws for a 56-52 edge. with 24 seconds left.
    After a timeout, Sonoma turned the ball over on a steal by Urzua who was fouled and then sank two free throws to ice the game with six seconds left.
    Takata had just four points, but they were crucial free throws and she accounted for five assists. Vore came off the bench to score four points and grab six rebounds. Amanda Ragains who had 19 points and 21 rebounds against Humboldt State, finished with five points and two rebounds against SSU.
