LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The California State University San Bernardino women's basketball team fell to the California State University Los Angeles Golden Eagles 79-62 on Thursday evening in a CCAA contest.
With the defeat, the Coyotes fall to 12-14 overall and 10-11 in CCAA play.
The Yotes got off to a strong start, holding a 16-8 lead with 6:25 left in the first quarter. The run was largely done by the efforts of sophomore Princess Cassell (Eastvale, Calif.) and redshirt sophomore Jaushlynn Ruffin (Compton, Calif.), who both had 10 points in the first quarter alone.
CSUSB shot 9-for-13 in the first quarter, including 5-for-8 from three-point range. Despite the offensive output, Cal State LA matched them, and the game was tied 26-26 at the end of the first quarter.
Early in the second quarter, senior Rebecca Saidoff (West Hills, Calif.) was fouled on a three-point attempt, and hit all three free throws before drilling a three-pointer to give the Yotes a 32-31 edge.
The Golden Eagles answered with an 8-0 run to build a 39-32 advantage, but CSUSB responded with an 8-0 run of their own to reclaim the lead, with Cassell and Ruffin accounting for all the points during the stretch. The Golden Eagles countered once more, carrying a 43-40 lead into halftime.
The Coyotes were able to keep it close early in the third quarter, but the Golden Eagles pulled away and never looked back, holding a 65-51 lead after the third quarter and leading by at least 10 points for all of the fourth quarter.
Cassell led all CSUSB scorers with 17, all of which came in the first half.
CSUSB closes out its regular season on Saturday when they face off in a road contest against Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off is set for 1 p.m.
