Coyotes roll past Pioneers 72-40

CSUSB defense limits East Bay to 18 points in second half in CCAA win

Senior Brittany Groves scored 13 points and had a game-high four assists and two steals in Saturday's win over Cal State East Bay.

    Cal State San Bernardino's defense limited Cal State East Bay to 24 percent shooting  and senior guards Krystal Urzua and Brittany Groves combined for 30 points Saturday night to lead the Coyotes to a 72-40 victory over the Pioneers in a CCAA conference women's basketball game.
    The victory evened the Coyotes CCAA record at 1-1 and improved their season mark to 3-1 as they take a break for Fall Quarter final exams next week. The Pioneersare now 0-3 overall, 0-2 in the CCAA.
    Urzua, the team's leading scorer at 20.3 points a game coming in, has 17 points while Groves had 13 points. Junior center Tiara Richardson clogged up the paint for CSUSB, collecting a game-high and personal best 17 rebounds, 11 of them on the defensive glass. Richardson also scored seven points.
    Junior Kymberly Ooten came off the bench to score nine points and collect nine rebounds for CSUSB.
    The Coyotes shot 40 percent for the game but 53 percent in the second half  (16 of 30) while the Pioneers made just 14 of 58 field goal attempts and were just three of 14 from three-point range.
    Freshman Claudia Nelson led the Pioneers with 13 points. Emily Valenziano had eight points. Laura Lecchesi had a team-high nine rebounds to go with four blocked shots and four points.
    The Coyotes outrebounded the visitors 53-42 and forced 23 East Bay turnovers.
    CSUSB had a narrow 13-9 lead with 14:33 left in the first half but stretched it out to 19-9 on a layup by Urzua. However, the Pioneers closed the gap to six points at 26-20 on a jumper by Nelson with 4:48 left in the half.
    The Coyotes outscored the Pioneers 8-2 in the final four minutes to lead 34-22 at the half.
    It was all San Bernardino in the second half as they outscored the visitors 25-9 to lead 59-31 with 7:43 left in the game on another layup by Urzua.
    Richardson's 17-rebound performance was the most by a Coyote since all-American Vanessa Wilt pulled down 20 in the 2007-08 season.
