CSUSB blanks Chaminade, 1-0; loses to HPU, 5-0

Jamie Lowe went 2-for-3 Saturday in game against Hawaii Pacific
TURLOCK -- It was feast or famine for Cal State San Bernardino on Saturday as they defeated Chaminade, 1-0, in their second game of the day at the 2008 Mizuno Tournament of Champions softball tournament after being blanked by West Region No. 2 Hawaii Pacific, 5-0, in the first game.
The Coyotes wind up pool play 2-2 and will learn late Saturday if they advance to elimination rounds on Sunday at Pedretti Park.  CSUSB is now 23-22-1 on the season.
In the win over the Silverswords, Debbie Shisler pitched five shutout innings, allowing three hits and striking out two. Tawni Baker took over and pitched the final two hitless innings, fanning two batters.
CSUSB scored the game's only run in the sixth off hard-luck losing pitcher Chelsi Walls. Ashley Collinwood doubled, advanced to third on a single by Priscilla Curiel and scored on a Chaminade error. Walls scattered seven hits and struck out eight for the Silverswords.
Collinwood was 2-for-3 in the game.
Earlier in the day, the Coyotes were shut out on five hits by Hawaii Pacific's Courtney Kessell (15-1), who recorded her 11th shutout of the season for a team that is 26-3 on the season.  Kessell struck out three and walked two. Jamie Lowe and Sara Bird each had two hits in the game for CSUSB.
CSUSB starter Cassidy Lee gave up three runs on three hits in her three-inning stint and took the loss. She is now 3-5 on the season. Baker came on to relieve Lee in the fourth and give up two hits and two runs while striking out three and not walking anyone.
Anuhea Young hit her fifth home run of the season for HPU, a two-run shot off Lee that gave the victors a 2-0 lead in the second inning. Nicole Kalakau homered with nobody on in the sixth off Baker.
In CSUSB's 5-3 win over Dixie State on Friday, details of which weren't known Friday night, the Coyotes took a 4-0 lead before DSC rallied for three runs in the fourth. However, the Coyotes added an insurance run in the fifth to take the victory.
In the first inning, Jordan Dahl singled and later scored on a wild pitch for a 1-0 CSUSB lead.
The Coyotes made it 2-0 in the second on freshman Jacquelyn Holtzclaw's RBI single that scored Priscilla Curiel.
Holtzclaw put CSUSB up 4-0 in the top of the fourth with a two-run homer, scoring Curiel ahead of her.
After Dixie State picked up three runs on five hits and two Coyotes errors in the fourth, CSUSB closed out the scoring with a run in the fifth on Nicole Camarena's RBI single.
Tawni Baker pitched four innings of shutout ball in relief of Debbie Shisler to get the win. Baker allowed only three hits and struck out five.
Later in the day, CSUSB lost to Grand Canyon 5-3.
