CLAREMONT, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino women's track & field team competed Saturday in the Pomona-Pitzer Invitational at Strehle Track.
The Coyotes finished in the top three of six different events on the day, starting with the very first event of the day, the 4x100 meter relay. The squad of La Sheau Hayden (Bakersfield, Calif.), Skye Harris (Los Angeles, Calif.), Coryssa Hope (Moreno Valley, Calif.), and Rymiyah Pringle-Hamilton (Oakland, Calif.) finished in second overall, running a season-best time of 46.88 seconds.
Harris was responsible for two of CSUSB's other top-three finishes. She was second in the 100 meter dash at 11.97 seconds, becoming just the fifth athlete in program history to break 12 seconds in the event. She was also third in the 200 at 24.34 seconds.
Also in the 100, Hayden was 12th at 12.38 seconds, while Pringle-Hamilton placed 15th at 12.48 seconds. In the 200, Hope placed fifth at 24.82, Pringle-Hamilton eighth at 25.11, senior Cierra Ellis (Eastvale, Calif.) was 12th at 25.33, and Hayden was 13th at 25.34 seconds.
The 4x400 meter relay team was the third team across the finish line on Saturday. The team of Hope, Pringle-Hamilton, Briana Miller (San Bernardino, Calif.), and Harris ran a time of 3:53.52, less than half a second shy of the program's season best.
The final two top-threes both came in field events. In the long jump, junior Joace Warrior (Colton, Calif.) placed second with a leap of 5.51 meters, while thrower Kennedi Jones (San Diego, Calif.) was the second place finisher in the shot put at 11.70 meters. Also in the shot put, junior Sidney Sparks (Claremont, Calif.) made the top-10 with a toss of 10.30 meters.
Back on the track, junior Yoselin Canseco (San Bernardino, Calif.) PRed in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, running a time of 11:41.94, good for eighth on the all-time CSUSB list. She is now joined on that list by freshman Julia Fernandez (Indio, Calif.), who finished exactly a second behind Canseco at 11:42.94, good for eighth all-time.
Hope was fifth in the 400 meter run, completing a lap around the track in 56.07 seconds. She was one of three Coyotes to finish in under a minute, joined by Miller at 59.65 seconds and freshman Jasmine Jaramillo (Lakewood, Calif.) at 59.88 seconds. In the 800, senior Kai Marroquin (Rosemead, Calif.) finished just outside the top five in sixth, running a 2:15.02.
In the 400 meter hurdles, the top Coyote finisher was senior Aiyana Allen-Jefferson (Riverside, Calif.), who crossed the finish line in 14th place at 1:08.82, while in the 1,500 meter run, the top Yote was senior Lidia Barrios (Perris, Calif.), who ran a 4:55.71. Barrios also led the Coyotes with her performance in the 5,000 meter to close out the day, running a time of 18:46.56.
Away from the track, the Coyotes placed sixth in two different throwing events. In the hammer, sophomore Madi Gutierrez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) placed sixth with a PR of 41.93 meters, while senior Melissa Fongod (Corona, Calif.) was sixth in the discus at 40.54 meters.
Rounding out the top Coyote finishers on Saturday was junior Natalie Paredes (Buena Park, Calif.), who had a javelin throw of 22.44 meters.
Next up, the Coyotes will divide and conquer three separate meets, all starting on Thursday with the Cal State LA Twilight Open, the Mt. SAC Relays, and Azusa Pacific's Bryan Clay Invitational.
