TURLOCK, Calif. — The California State University San Bernardino softball team split its doubleheader against the Stanislaus State Warriors on Saturday afternoon.
CSUSB triumphed 4-1 in the first game before falling 5-0 in the second.
With the split, the Coyotes move to 12-12 overall and 4-4 in CCAA play.
Game 1: CSUSB 4, Stanislaus State 1
The Coyotes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead thanks to an RBI single from redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.).
Senior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) extended CSUSB's lead to two with an RBI single in the top of the third.
CSUSB would go up 3-0 after an RBI single from senior Alex Hooper (Auburn, Calif.) an inning later.
Stanislaus State got its first three runners on base in the bottom of the sixth and cut the Yotes' lead to 3-1, which forced a pitching change. Senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) threw 5+ innings up until that point, allowing just one run on eight hits and zero walks. Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) was able to get out of a jam, preserving the 3-1 lead.
Castillo came up clutch again, hitting an RBI single in the seventh to extend CSUSB's lead to 4-1.
In the bottom of the seventh, Paquin threw a 1-2-3 seventh to earn her third save of the season.
Hooper, Castillo, and Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) each led the way with two hits for the Coyotes, while Castillo led CSUSB with two RBIs.
Game 2: Stanislaus State 5, CSUSB 0
Stanislaus State wasted no time, scoring four runs in the first inning, and did not look back. They would score another run in the third, which held for the rest of the game.
Despite coming up empty-handed, Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.), Castillo, Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.), and Escujuri each ended up with a hit for the Yotes.
Paquin earned the start but allowed three runs (two earned) in the first inning before being pulled. Redshirt sophomore Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.) threw six innings in relief, allowing just two runs on five hits without walking a batter.
CSUSB returns home next week against Chico State for a four-game set starting on Friday
