Softball Blanks Saint Martin's on Day Two of NorCal Crossover

TRACY, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a pair of non-conference contests on their second and final day at the NorCal Crossover Saturday afternoon at the Tracy Sports Complex.

CSUSB opened the day with a 5-0 shutout of Saint Martin's, before falling 5-2 to Biola University.

With the split, the Yotes now sit at 8-8 overall on the season.

Game 1: CSUSB 5, Saint Martin's 0

Senior pitcher Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) was nearly unhittable in game one, helping lift CSUSB to a shutout victory. In her complete game win, she allowed only one hit, a second inning single, while striking out four and issuing zero walks.

Two batters provided all the offense for the Coyotes. Senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) broke the ice in the top of the third inning, belting a two-run home to left to put CSUSB ahead by a pair.

Two innings later, Bejarano drove in her third run of the game with an RBI single through the left. She would come around to score on a sacrifice fly from redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.), stretching Cal State San Bernardino's lead to 4-0.

A Castillo RBI double in the top of the seventh gave the Yotes some insurance, giving the game its final score of 5-0.

CSUSB scattered seven hits in the win, with two each from Bejarano and Legler. The pair also each scored two runs.

Game 2: Biola 5, CSUSB 2

Neither team scored a run until the top of the fifth inning, when the Eagles broke the game open with a pair of runs. CSUSB got one back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single up the middle from senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.), plating sophomore Daniela Luden (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif.) to get the Yotes on the board.

After Biola scored their third run of the game in the top of the sixth, Castillo knocked home sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) with a base hit to cut the gap to 3-2.

The Eagles scored a pair of runs in the top of the seventh to put the game out of reach. The Coyotes went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh to end the contest.

In the circle, the loss was charged to starter Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.), who threw 4+ innings, allowing a pair of earned runs on five hits. She was relieved by Legler, who threw three innings out of the pen, striking out three.

Castillo was the only Coyote to notch multiple hits, going 2-for-3 with a run batted in.

Next on the docket for the Coyotes is their home-opener against San Francisco State on Friday to open CCAA play. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 12 p.m.
