SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team posted a pair of victories over San Francisco State Universty on Saturday in a CCAA doubleheader at the CSUSB Softball Park.
The Yotes won game one 9-6, before prevailing 3-1 in a low-scoring game two to claim the series.
With the wins, the Coyotes improve to 11-9 overall and 3-1 in CCAA play.
Game 1 - CSUSB 9, San Francisco State 6
San Francisco State scored first with a run in the second inning. CSUSB answered in its half of the second as a Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.)Â RBI single scored a run and Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) followed with an RBI that gave San Bernardino a 2-1 lead.
In the third inning the Coyotes broke the game open, scoring five times. Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) gave the Coyotes the lead with a two-run double, and Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) added an RBI single and later scored on a Moite sacrifice fly. Castillo also scored on an SF State miscue.Â
A two-run Brazill triple in the fourth gave the Yotes some insurance that proved key in the top of the seventh. The Gators scored three runs in the frame, cutting into the lead, but the Coyotes held on for the 9-6 victory.
Brazill paced CSUSB with a 3-for-3 outing, notching three RBIs and scoring a run. Griego was the only other Yote with multiple hits, going 2-for-3.
In the circle, Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) earned the win, going 6.2 innings and allowing five earned runs while recording six strikeouts. Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) recorded the final out for the save.
Game 2 - CSUSB 3, San Francisco State 1
All of CSUSB's offense came in the same four-pitch span in the bottom of the second inning.
With a runner on first base, Legler pulled an 0-2 pitch over the wall down the left field line for a two-run homer, putting her team ahead 2-0.Â
Three pitches later, senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) crushed an opposite field homer to extend CSUSB's lead to 3-0.
Redshirt sophomore pitcher Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.) was lights out for CSUSB in the circle, carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning. The Gators scored their only run of the contest in the fifth as well on an RBI groundout, cutting their deficit down to 3-1.
The Coyotes scattered 11 hits in the win, with three each from Skinner, sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beamont, Calif.), and Castillo.Â
Skinner earned her second win of the season in the circle, going the distance and allowing just the one earned run on three hits.
Next up, CSUSB travels to Stanislaus State for a four-game set in Turlock starting on Friday.
