TURLOCK, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team dropped a pair of CCAA games to Stanislaus State on Friday afternoon.
CSUSB fell 10-8 in the opener before dropping the second game 4-2.
With the losses, the Coyotes move to 11-11 overall and 3-3 in CCAA play.
Game 1: Stanislaus State 10, CSUSB 8
The Coyotes jumped out to an early lead with a four-run third inning. Senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) doubled to right center to get CSUSB on the board. Later in the inning, senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) tied the game with a two-RBI single. Junior Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) followed with an RBI single to give the Coyotes a 4-3 lead.
Stanislaus State answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to take a 5-4 advantage. The Warriors added two more runs in the bottom of the fifth to extend their lead to 7-4.
CSUSB responded in the top of the sixth. Junior Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) delivered an RBI single, and Bejarano followed with another RBI hit to cut the deficit to 7-6.
Sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) then came through with a two-RBI double, giving the Coyotes an 8-7 lead.
However, the Warriors responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead for good. Stanislaus State scored at least two runs in four innings and capitalized on four CSUSB errors.
Bejarano led the Coyotes with three hits in the game, while Bejarano, Mejia, and Brazill each finished with two RBIs.
Senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs on five hits.
Game 2: Stanislaus State 4, CSUSB 2
The second game remained scoreless until the bottom of the third inning, when Stanislaus State plated three runs to take the early lead.
Senior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) put CSUSB on the board in the top of the fourth with an RBI single. She added another RBI single in the sixth inning to cut the Warriors' lead to 3-2.
Stanislaus State added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, and the Coyotes were unable to rally in the seventh inning.
Escujuri recorded her first three-hit game of the season and drove in both runs for CSUSB.
Freshman Mo Cash (Upland, Calif.) took the loss in the circle, allowing three runs over 2.1 innings. Sophomore Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) provided 3.2 strong innings of relief, allowing just one run.
CSUSB and Stanislaus State conclude the series tomorrow with another doubleheader. First pitch for Game 1 is scheduled for 11 a.m.
