Softball Opens Conference Play with Split

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split a CCAA doubleheader with San Francisco State University Friday afternoon at the CSUSB Softball Park.

CSUSB opened the day with an 11-3 win, before dropping the day's second game by a final of 9-3.

With the results, the Coyotes move to 9-9 overall on the season and open conference play at 1-1.

Game 1: Cal State San Bernardino 11, San Francisco State 3 (5 Innings)

Cal State San Bernardino scored first in the bottom of the first inning, when junior Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) notched an RBI single to bring home senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.).

The Gators evened the score in the second on a solo home run, but the Coyotes responded with a three-run second inning thanks to a bases-clearing double from sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.).

CSUSB extended its lead in the third when senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) hit a solo home run down the line in right.

In the fourth, the Coyotes put up three more runs to go ahead 8-1. Bejarano opened the frame with an RBI double, and later scored on a double steal to put the Yotes up by six. Mejia capped the frame with an RBI single, giving her four RBIs for the afternoon.

San Francisco State added two runs in the fifth inning, but CSUSB one-upped that with three more in the bottom half to finish the run-rule shortened win. Brazill scored on a passed ball, Bejarano drove in a run with a single, and a bases-loaded walk from redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) accounted for all the offense in the inning.

Bejarano finished with three hits and two RBIs, Mejia drove in four runs, and Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) and Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) each had a pair of hits and multiple runs scored.

In the circle, Legler earned the win, allowing two earned runs on five hits while striking out four.

Game 2: San Francisco State 9, Cal State San Bernardino 3

San Francisco State scored two runs in the second inning to take the early lead. CSUSB responded in the third when Legler belted a solo home run over the wall in left center, trimming the deficit to 2-1.

The Gators added a run in the fourth to extend the lead to 3-1. In the fifth inning, San Bernardino scored on an RBI single by Castillo that brought home Paquin, cutting San Francisco State's advantage to 3-2.

San Francisco State scored four runs in the sixth inning to push the lead to 7-2. CSUSB answered with a run in the bottom of the sixth as Legler drove in a run with an RBI double, making it 7-3.

In the seventh, San Francisco State added two more runs to reach the final margin.

Legler finished with two hits, both for extra bases, and drove in two runs for the Coyotes. Castillo, Paquin, Bejarano and senior Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) all recorded base hits for the Coyotes.

Paquin took the loss in the circle, allowing three earned runs in five innings of work.

CSUSB and San Francisco State will wrap up their series on Saturday with a twinbill at the CSUSB Softball Park. First pitch in game one of the doubleheader is slated for 11 a.m.
