A contingent of Cal State San Bernardino track and field athletes made another attempt to reach the qualification standards for the NCAA championships at the Azusa Pacific Last Chance meet on May 12-13.
Danielle Lister took third in the discus throw at 137 feet, 1 inch, five feet shy of her 2023 best at 142 feet, 6 inches. The CSUSB 4X100 meter relay team took third place in 46.10, after posting sub-46.0 clocking's at the CCAA championships.
Sariyah Copeland, who didn't make the final field in the 100 despite posting a tie for the fifth fastest qualifying time of 11.68, came back in the 200-meter finals to finish fifth with 23.76.
There were even heats in the 100 meters and Copeland was second in her heat, but meet officials pre-determined that only the winners of each heat and the fastest second-place finisher would advance to the final. Normally, when there are heats, the fastest eight or nine finishers over all the heats advance.
The official results show that Copeland lost out to Rajai Andrews of Tiffin University for that ninth spot in the finals although both ran 11.68. Andrews raw time was 11.680 while Copeland's raw time was 11.675, according to royalresults.com.
Other CSUSB athletes also competed in the meet:
- Journie Alexander finished seventh in the long jump at 19 feet, a half inch, the second best jump of her career. She set a team record at 19 feet, 7 inches earlier this season.
- Elizabeth Rushing finished eighth in the hammer throw with a toss of 141 feet, 5 inches, well below her season best of 152 feet and change.
- Na'Kel Pennix Webb ran the fastest 400 meters of her season (57.78) but it was only good for 12th place.
- Kyndahl Carter ran a solid 14.56 in the 100 hurdles but wound-up 11th in the field.
- Alexis White, who became the CSUSB record holder in the 40o meters, wound up 15th in the 200 meters at 24.55.
