Payton McCartney Pernell came through with a personal best score in the heptathlon Friday, scoring 3,827 points at the San Diego State Aztec Invitational.
The score was good enough for her to move into third place on the CSUSB track and field team's personal performance list just behind Tory Wiley's mark of 3,846 points set in 2019.
Casie Johnson holds the top mark in program history – 4,540 points set in 2017.
Pernell's teammate,
Kaleigh Giannone finished the seven events with 3,479 points, 82 points below her personal best of 3,561 points, now ranked No. 4 on the all-time CSUSB list.
Pernell surpassed 600 points in three events and 700 points in her best event, the 200 meters, where her time of 26.44 produced 759 points on the chart, finishing seventh overall in the race. She ran the 100 hurdles in 16.13, good for 668 points. She ran 16.06 this year. Pernell received 662 points for her 2:32.50 time in finishing 14
th in the closing event of the meet, the 800 meters and 621 points for her 4 foot, 11-inch high jump effort.
Giannone was strong in the 800 meters, finishing right behind Pernell in 2:32.79 for 659 points, her best event of the seven.
Pernell finished the first four events on Thursday with 2,322 points to 1,941 for Giannone.
The Yotes duo finished behind two CCAA competitors from Cal Poly Humboldt who wound up 11
th and 13
th in the field of more than 20 competitors, mostly from NCAA Division 1 schools.
