REDLANDS, Calif. – Cal State San Bernardino's 4X100 meter relay team set a new track and field school record in the event for the second week in a row Friday, winning the race in 46.83 at the University of Redlands Invitational. The previous all-time best mark of 47.53 was set March 11 at the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton. It was one of several top performances by the Coyotes in both track and field events on Friday.
The relay quartet of
Mahlaya Salter,
Hailey Hunt,
Sariyah Copeland, and
Alexis White all did well in their individual events during the meet. A second 4X100 meter relay team from CSUSB, consisting of
Journie Alexander,
Kyndahl Carter,
Na'kel Pennix-Webb and
Maame Banahene, finished seventh at 48.88, ranking them No. 9 on the CSUSB top 10 performance list.
In the sprint events, White, a sophomore from Adelanto, finished fourth in the 400 meters, with a season best of 58.78, good for No. 2 on the all-time performance list behind
Payton McCartney-Pernell's 58.62 set in 2020. Pennix-Webb, a sophomore from Redlands, posted the eighth best time on the all-time performance list with a 1:00.11 finish, good for seventh place. White's and Pennix-Webb's performances qualified them to compete at the CCAA Championships the first weekend of May.
Hunt, a sophomore from Riverside, ran the 100 meters into a headwind, finishing sixth at 12.48.
Sariyah Copeland, a sophomore from Fresno, took second in the 200 meters with a season best of 24.73, just off her top time of 24.58 set at the 2022 CCAA Championships. Freshman,
Payton McCartney-Pernell finished 9
th overall in the 200 meters with a personal best of 26.06, earning her the No. 10 on the CSUSB all time performance list. Carter, a junior from Los Angeles, also ran a personal best of 26.72 finishing 19
th overall out of 54 competitors. Carter continues to impress in the 100 meter hurdles, finishing third in a headwind at 15.05, 14 ticks off her season best of 14.91 set earlier this month, which ranks No. 2 all-time on the performance list.
Heptathlete, McCartney-Pernell ran a personal best time of 16.06, good for 10
th place overall, earning her the No. 5 spot on the top 10 performance list.
In the jumps,
Gabrielle Aguigui, a sophomore from Vacaville, won her flight in the triple jump and placed 6
th overall, moving into the No. 4 spot on the events all-time performance list when she finished with a season best mark of 10.22 meters (33'6.5"). Long jumper, Alexander finished in 7
th with a jump of 5.09m (16'11.25").
Elizabeth Rushing, a sophomore from San Jose, led in the throwing events, finishing seventh in the hammer throw with a personal best of 45.62m (149'8") moving her into second place on the all-time performance list.
Abby Venglass was 12
th in the event at 42.12m (138'2"); she also finished 11
th in the shot put with throw of 11.10 meters (36'5").
Danielle Lister, a sophomore thrower from Canyon Country, finished seventh in the discus at 37.17m (121'11") followed by teammates, Venglass at 34.84m (114'3") placing 14
th, and Rushing at 32.72m (107'4") finishing 16
th overall, and also earning the No. 10 spot on the CSUSB all time performance list.
The distance group shined brightly with several outstanding performances, as
Joanna Lopez, a sophomore from Ontario, finished second in the 3000 meters with a 40-second personal best at 10:14.55, good for the No. 3 best mark all-time on the top 10 performance list, which dates back to 2015.
Helena Valdez won her heat in the 1500 meters, with a personal best of 5:04 finishing 9
th out of 33 runners. Other highlights in the 1500 meters include personal bests from
Caty Gaynor (5:26),
Samantha Avila (5:38) and
Giselle Cabrera with a 27-second improvement at 5:47.
Kai Marroquin, a freshman from Rosemead, led the Yotes in the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.53, good for the No. 10 spot on the CSUSB performance list, ranking her #7 in the conference.
Tayonna Hargrove finished 11
th overall with a season best of 2:29.57. Valdez came back after the 1500 meters to finish off the day with the 800 meters, winning her heat with a season best of 2:32.58. The Yotes finished strong with a series of personal bests from
Arlene Castro (2:39.70),
Samantha Avila (2:40.90), Gaynor (2:42.88) and Cabrera (2:43.94).
The meet concluded in the cold, late night with the 4x400 meter relay with a winning time of 4:04.25. The team consisted of
Alexis White,
Sariyah Copeland,
Hailey Hunt and
Maame Banahene. A second CSUSB (Distance) 4x400 meter relay team finished fourth overall with Kia Marroquin,
Joanna Lopez,
Tayonna Hargrove and
Aiyana Allen-Jefferson (4:23.12).
