The CSUSB Coyotes competed at the CSU Northridge Invitational at the Matador Stadium in Northridge April 1st and 2nd. The Two-day meet provided another opportunity for the Yotes to gain a conference qualifying mark for the CCAA Championship happening May 5th through 7th at San Francisco State University.
On the first day of the meet, Sariyah Copeland wasted no time on bettering her school record in the 200m dash from last week, crossing the line in a time of 24.58. This time was second at the meet and kept her second in the CCAA conference rankings. This is one of three events Copeland is top two in the conference in as of this writing (100m, 200m, 4x100m). She also ran 12.29 in the 100m, finishing 5th in the event, and helped the 4x100m to a time of 48.76, earning the team of Journie Alexander, Ladaijah Wright, and Maya Price a 5th all-time mark at CSUSB.
The Throws group competed in the hammer on the first day of the meet, competing well with Victoria Soto, 35.91m, and Abby Venglass, 45.46m, earning personal bests in the event. Tayler Salley threw the hammer to 50.08m, earning her 3rd place at the meet. Salley and Venglass finished 3rd and 4th overall, they were the top Division-II placers in the event ahead of fellow CCAA team CSU Los Angeles.
Joanna Lopez competed in her first 5000m of the year crossing the line in a time of 19:22.50. She finished second in the event. Destiny Colton competed in the long jump and leapt to a CCAA qualifying distance of 5.00m even. This was a season's best for her this year.
Abby Venglass started off day two with a personal best in the javelin throw with a CCAA qualifying mark of 28.30m. This is her fourth event that she has qualified in for the CCAA championships.
Nicole Renteria led the pack of Coyotes in the 1500m in a time of 5:20.25 racing in the fast heat of the day. This bettered her previous season's best by over 2 seconds. She was one of 4 coyotes with season's best in the event next to Genesis Obispo (5:22.34), Justine Ziranda (5:24.06) and Maria Rojas in her first ever collegiate race with the Coyotes in a time of 5:46.18. Savannah Milner led the pack of Coyotes in the 800m with a time of 2:28.79. She was one of 6 Coyotes with personal or seasons bests in the event.
"We had an educational experience this weekend and learned a lot about how to compete in different circumstances. Weather wasn't what we were used to but it's something we may see at the conference meet, so we must learn from it and take that with us going forward. We're really excited for the next few weekends at UCSD and up north at the Johnny Mathis meet held at San Francisco State." - Coach Moe
