GREENWOOD, Ind. – CSUSB cross country and track and field student-athlete Arianna Fuentes was named to the Google Cloud Academic All-American Second Team, announced today. She is one of only three CCAA student-athletes on the list and one of only seven from the West Region.
Fuentes maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA and is working on her master's degree in social work.
Fuentes, who was CCAA All-Academic as well, finished 25th at the CCAA Cross Country Championships and 81st at the NCAA West Regional Championships. She had a great track and field season, competing in the 3000 meter steeplechase where she finished fifth at the CCAA Championships, scoring for CSUSB. She holds the second-fastest time in the event in school history at 11:03.09.
She is the second Coyote to earn the honor this year, joining Gabby Evaristo (women's soccer). This marks the second-straight year CSUSB has had at least two recipients of the prestigious award.
"Being selected Academic All-American is such an honor. It would not have been possible without the support from my loving parents, supporting teammates and friends, coach Tom Burleson, and CSUSB's counseling and psychological services," Fuentes said. "Being in the master's of social work program, my grades are bigger than myself. Doing better in school means that I get to better help serve others. Once I realized my passion to help others it became clear that I need to continue to develop and gain more knowledge so I can be capable. It is not talking of love, but living in love that is everything."
The 16 CoSIDA Academic All-America® Division II women's track/cross country first team members hold a composite 3.90 GPA. Twenty-one members of the 45-player first, second and third teams honorees hold a perfect 4.00 cumulative GPA.
