Coyotes snap 12-year losing streak in dramatic fashion

CSUSB routs Cal Baptist, 11-1 in 5 innings

Tiffany McIntosh capped the second game with a grand slam.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN BERNARDINO – Cal State San Bernardino turned aside a 12-year losing streak to Cal Baptist in resounding fashion Tuesday afternoon.

After losing the opener 11-2, the Coyotes scored seven runs in the first inning and added a grand slam by Tiffany McIntosh and masterful pitching by freshman LHP Cassandra Williams in an 11-1 victory.

CBU extended its winning streak to 24 games with the opening win before the Coyotes stopped the streak in a poignant manner. The last time CSUSB defeated the Lancers was on Jan. 19, 2002 – a 6-0 win.

Both games were called due to the eight-run rule in the fifth inning.

CSUSB (7-6 overall) returns to Coyote Park on Friday afternoon when it takes on Sonoma State. First pitch is 12 p.m.

Game 1: Cal Baptist 11, Coyotes 2

Savannah Miller had six RBI that included a three-run home run as the Lancers routed the Coyotes in the opener.

Nicole Nobbe had a sacrifice fly RBI in the third and Thalia Ortiz had a run-scoring double to left center in the fifth.

Ortiz was the only Coyote to have an extra-base hit.

Game 2: Coyotes 11, Cal Baptist 1

The Coyotes came out of the chute with seven runs on seven hits in the first inning and that was more than enough for Williams, who finished the Lancers off with a 2-hit complete game.

Nobbe gave the Coyotes a 1-0 lead on a single to left and one batter later, McIntosh laced a two-run double.

Williams then drew a walk, and Victoria Lievanos and Mary Menicucci followed with consecutive walks to load the bases for sophomore Melissa Roberts.

The Yucaipa native hit a sinking pop fly to right for a single, but moved to third on a two-base error by the right fielder, scoring three runs for a 7-0 lead.

In the third, Alyssa Ramos and Darian Manuz singled and Nobbe walked to load the bases.

That set the stage for McIntosh, who hit a big-time blast to left for the grand slam and an 11-1 lead.

Williams struck out six, walked one and gave up only one extra-base hit – a solo homer by Marshean August in the third. She is now 5-4 on the year.
