CARSON, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team split its CCA doubleheader against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Friday Afternoon at Toro Diamond.
CSUSB defeated the Toros 9-4 in the first game of the day, before falling 7-2 in the second.
With the split, the Coyotes move to 14-16 overall and 6-8 in CCAA play.
Game 1: CSUSB 9, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4
CSUSB wasted no time, scoring five runs in the first inning. Senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) led off with a single and later scored via a fielding error. Senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) then singled to give the Coyotes an early 2-0 lead.
The following at-bat, sophomore Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) doubled, driving in a pair of runs to extend the Coyote advantage to 4-0. Junior Isabella Venegas (Upland, Calif.) finished off the rally by hitting an RBI single to push the lead to 5-0.
The Toros responded with four runs in the bottom of the second to cut the Yotes' lead to 5-4, a score that held until the fifth inning when senior Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.) hit a solo home run over the fence in right center field..
Brazill extended the lead with a three-run homer in the sixth, pushing the Yotes ahead 9-4, where it would remain the rest of the way.
Brazill led all Yotes with three hits and four RBIs. In the circle, senior Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) earned the win, allowing three earned runs over seven innings to improve to 10-5.
Game 2: Cal State Dominguez Hills 7, CSUSB 2
CSUSB had opportunities in the second inning, when Mejia and Madison Zaro (Chino, Calif.) each singled, but both were left stranded.
Dominguez Hills then erupted for six runs in the bottom of the second and did not look back, adding another run in the fourth.
Bejarano doubled and later scored after Escujuri reached on an error to put CSUSB on the board in the top of the fifth.
An inning later, Venegas added an infield single and was driven in by Legler to make it 7-2 in favor of the Toros.
Bejarano and Mejia led CSUSB with two hits apiece in the second game, while Legler recorded the Coyotes' lone RBI.
Redshirt sophomore Tara Skinner (Menifee, Calif.) took the loss in the circle for the Coyotes, allowing four earned runs over 1.1 innings. Freshman Mo Cash (Upland, Calif.) was solid out of the bullpen, giving up one earned run over three innings.
CSUSB and Cal State Dominguez Hills conclude the series tomorrow with a doubleheader. First pitch of Game one is scheduled for 12 p.m.
