SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - The California State University San Bernardino softball team suffered two defeats at the hands of Chico State on Saturday afternoon to close out their four-game CCAA series at CSUSB Softball Park.
With the defeats, the Yotes drop to 13-15 overall on the season and 5-7 in CCAA play.
Game 1: Chico State 6, CSUSB 5
The Wildcats jumped out to an early lead with three runs in the top of the first, but the Coyotes got two back in the bottom of the frame on an RBI double from senior
Mia Escujuri (Chino Hills, Calif.).
Chico State scored single runs in the third and fourth to extend their lead to three, but CSUSB got one back when Escujuri belted her first home run of the season over the center field, chipping the deficit to 5-3.
The visitors grabbed what proved to be a massive insurance run in the top of the seventh, as Coyote senior
Sarah Moite (Fresno, Calif.) delivered a two-out, two-strike two-run single in the bottom of the frame to trim the lead to one, but the Coyotes could get no closer and the game finished 6-5.
Senior
Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) had a 4-for-4 game one, while Escujuri went 3-for-4 with three RBIs in the defeat.
The loss was charged to senior
Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.) who conceded five earned with six strikeouts over four innings pitched.
Game 2: Chico State 7, CSUSB 3
The Coyotes jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in game two on another Escujuri RBI base hit, but the lead would be short-lived as Chico State plated six runs in the top of the second to claim a 6-1 lead.
The Coyotes cut into the lead by scoring a pair in the bottom of the third. Junior
Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) had an RBI double in the inning, before sophomore
Iliana Mejia (Beaumont, Calif.) drove her home with a sac fly to left.
That would be it for the Coyote offense however. Chico State added an insurance run in the top of the sixth to give the game its final score of 7-3.
Escujuri shined again for CSUSB with a 3-for-3 outing, finishing the doubleheader at a 6-for-7 clip. Griego was the only other Yote with multiple hits, going 2-for-4.
Next up for the Coyotes, they'll hit the road for a series at Cal State Dominguez Hills starting on Friday.
