Softball Splits Series Finale with Cal State Dominguez Hills

CARSON, Calif. — The California State University San Bernardino softball team split its CCAA doubleheader against the Cal State Dominguez Hills Toros on Saturday Afternoon at Toro Diamond.

CSUSB won 5-4 in the first game before falling 3-2 in the second.

With the split, the Coyotes move to 15-17 overall and 7-9 in CCAA play.

Game 1: CSUSB 5, Cal State Dominguez Hills 4

The game remained scoreless until the third inning, when Coyote redshirt sophomore Danyelle Castillo (Atwater, Calif.) helped spark the Coyotes' offense with an RBI single, putting CSUSB on top 1-0.

However, Cal State Dominguez Hills responded with a pair of runs in both the third and fourth innings to take a 4-1 lead.

The Coyotes began to chip away in the fifth, as senior Iris Bejarano (Salinas, Calif.) hit a solo home run to cut the deficit to 4-2.

CSUSB continued its push in the sixth, when senior Brooke Brazill (Clovis, Calif.) tripled and later scored on a wild pitch to bring the Coyotes within one at 4-3.

In the seventh, Bejarano drew a leadoff walk before junior Katie Griego (Rialto, Calif.) came through with a go-ahead two-run home run that put CSUSB in front for good.

Castillo and Brazill each recorded two hits, while Griego led the team with two RBIs.

In the circle, freshman Mo Cash (Upland, Calif.) earned the win in relief, tossing 3.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits after replacing starter Ashley Legler (San Diego, Calif.), who went 3.2 innings.

Game 2: Cal State Dominguez Hills 3, CSUSB 2

CSUSB carried its momentum into game two, as Bejarano led off game two with a home run to give the Coyotes a 1-0 lead.

Dominguez Hills answered with runs in the second and third innings to take a 2-1 advantage.

The Coyotes responded in the middle innings, as Griego recorded a one-out single and later came around to score, tying the game at 2-2.

With the game still deadlocked in the seventh, the Toros secured the win with a walk-off RBI triple to split the series.

Bejarano led CSUSB with two hits and the team's lone RBI.

After closing game one, Cash got the start in game two, allowing two earned runs over 2.1 innings. Sophomore Ava Paquin (Fullerton, Calif.) added 3.2 innings of scoreless relief, while Legler was charged with the loss after pitching the seventh.

CSUSB returns home to face Azusa Pacific in a doubleheader Wednesday, with first pitch scheduled for 12 p.m.
