Box Score: Coyotes 10, CSUDH 2
SAN BERNARDINO -- Cal State San Bernardino received timely hitting from any number of Coyotes on Thursday afternoon as they defeated Cal State Dominguez Hills 10-2 in the series opener at Fiscalini Field.
The Coyotes won their fourth straight game and improved to 10-9 overall and 7-4 in the CCAA. The Toros are 8-16, 4-13.
Junior RHP
Aaron Brooks was solid in his eight innings of work with 10 strikeouts and received more than enough support as he improved to 2-4 on the season. He allowed just four hits and issued his first base on balls of the season -- ending his streak of 39 1/3 innings without a walk.
The Coyotes totaled 15 hits off Toros pitching -- tying their best effort at the plate this season.
Tied at 2-2 through five innings, the Coyotes got the lead for good with a three-run sixth.
Brandon Day broke the tie with a sacrifice fly that drove in
David Silvas, who led off with a single. That brought up
Virgil Chavira, who ripped a two-run shot over the left-field wall and CSUSB led 5-2.
CSUSB added a single run in the seventh on Silvas' run-scoring single that scored
Erik Ornelas who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Coyotes added four runs in the eighth -- capped by
Eric Dow's three-run home run to left center.
Chavira was 3-for-3 with two RBI and Silvas was 3-for-5. Sophomore
Ethan Chapman had a triple and a double and
Nick Heusterberg had two doubles.
The series continues at Fiscalini Field on Friday with first pitch at 3 p.m. The series moves to Carson on Saturday with a doubleheader that begins at 11 a.m.
