LA JOLLA — Cal State San Bernardino got exactly what it wanted out of its four-game series with No. 1 UC San Diego; a split. After splitting the first two games of the series and dropping the first game of Saturday's doubleheader, 12-1, the Coyotes picked up the split, winning the second game, 3-2.
The Coyotes (18-12, 17-11 CCAA) got behind freshman
Ethan Chapman who went 3-for-4 with three runs scored and an RBI in the nightcap. The freshman singled to lead off the second game of the doubleheader and then scored on an
Andrew Harrison single up the middle. After the Tritons (30-5, 20-4 CCAA) answered with a solo home run in the bottom of the first and CSUSB left two on base in the second, it was Chapman again who was the run producer when he hit his team-leading ninth home run of the season to put CSUSB up 2-1 in the fifth.
Chapman also scored the final run for the Coyotes in the seventh when he scored on a
Bryant Veiga single up the middle. Veiga's base hit was one of three straight singles for CSUSB after the first two batters went down in order.
Daniel Stenavich (3-3), who started the game for CSUSB, had allowed just one run on two hits in the first six innings and took the hill for the seventh inning. The senior walked the first batter and gave up a single to put runners at first and second. The Tritons loaded the bases on a CSUSB error before making it a 3-2 game with a sacrifice fly.
Andrew Schile then took the mound and recorded a strike out and a pop up to notch his seventh save of the year.
Seven different Coyotes recorded at least one of CSUSB's 10 hits.
In the opener, Chapman was the only Coyote to drive in a run when he hit a sac fly to right to score
James Kono in the fifth. That run put Cal State San Bernardino within one at 2-1, but the Tritons scored 10 runs with four in the seventh and sixth in the eighth to put the game away.
Cody Madison and
Darren Dworak each went 2-for-4 while Chapman was 1-for-4.
Trevor Longfellow (3-3) took the loss for the Coyotes after throwing 6 1/3 innings.
The Coyotes remain just a game back of Chico State and are two games up on Cal State Stanislaus, who plays UCSD next week, and Cal State L.A., who plays Chico State next week.
