SAN BERNARDINO — After Cal State San Bernardino stopped No. 1 UC San Diego's 19-game winning streak, Thursday, the Tritons responded with five two-run home runs and hit six total in a 14-7 win over the Coyotes Friday.
The Tritons (29-4, 19-3 CCAA) hit home runs early and often, but didn't put the Coyotes away (17-11, 16-10 CCAA) until the final three innings.
The Tritons got on the board first when Blake Tagmyer hit a two-run shot to left center to give UCSD a 2-0 lead in the top of the second. Brandon Gregorich added two more with a home run to left field in the third to put the Tritons up 4-0.
The Coyotes cut it to 4-1 in the bottom of the third when
Ethan Chapman singled to left field to score
James Kono, who singled to lead off the inning.
UCSD jumped out to a 6-1 advantage on its third two-run home run of the game when Evan Kehoe blasted a shot over the left field fence.
CSUSB got two runs back in the fifth to make it 6-3. The Coyotes loaded the bases to start the inning when
Chris LeFay was hit by a pitch, Kono singled and
Brent Planck was walked. Chapman drove in the first run with a fielder's choice before
Erik Ornelas singled up the middle to score Kono.
The Tritons stretched out their lead to 9-3 with three runs in the top of the seventh.
Ornelas added one run in the bottom of the seventh with a two-out single to right field to score Chapman who doubled in the previous at bat.
Gregorich and Tagmyer each hit their second two-run home run in the top of the eighth to give the Tritons a 13-4 lead.
Bryant Veiga hit his sixth home run of the year when he launched a solo shot to left field to make it 13-5, but UCSD answered right back with a solo home run in the ninth to lead 14-5. The Coyotes tried to rally in the bottom of the ninth with two outs and scored two when Veiga hit a bases loaded double down the left field line to make it 14-7, but that was the end of the run.
Kirby St. John moved to 7-1 on the season for UCSD after throwing the first 6 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on six hits.
Brandon Cunniff (4-2) took the loss, giving up nine runs on 12 hits in 6 1/3 innings of work.
Veiga was 2-for-5 on the day with three RBIs and one run scored. Chapman and Ornelas each drove in a pair of runs while Chapman scored two. Chapman went 2-for-5 while Ornelas was 2-for-4. Kono also scored a pair of runs, going 2-for-3.
The four-game series is now split at 1-1 with the final two games to be played tomorrow in La Jolla, Calif., in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
