TURLOCK — Cal State San Bernardino saved a sweep by taking a 6-3 win in the final game of the four-game series with Cal State Stanislaus after the Warriors won the first three.

The Coyotes (12-5, 12-4 CCAA) still secure at least a tie for first in the California Collegiate Athletic Association with UC San Diego and Chico State.

In a reverse of rolls from the previous three games, it was Cal State Stanislaus that took the first lead of the game. The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth before the Coyotes answered with one in the top of the fifth. Cody Madison and Darren Dworak ripped back-to-back singles before James Kono pushed them into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Chris LeFay then hit a sac fly to right field to tie the contest at 1-1.

The Coyotes took a 4-1 lead in the top of the sixth with three more runs. Ethan Chapman ripped a leadoff triple to right center before Erik Ornelas singled to center to score Chapman. Matthew Winn then singled through the left side and moved to up second on the throw to third in an attempt to get Ornelas rounding from first.

Bryant Veiga brought home Ornelas with a sac fly before Madison singled to left to score Winn.

After the Warriors got one run back in the bottom half of the inning, CSUSB stretched it out to a 6-2 lead in the seventh. Winn drove in the first run of the inning with a double to right center to score Chapman. Winn then crossed the plate on a Madison single to left field.

The Warriors added another in the seventh to make it 6-3 and threatened in the ninth with a runner and first and second base with one out, but Carlos Nakamura notched his first save the year by retiring the final two batters of the game.

Madison led the way going 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Winn was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored while Chapman was 2-for-5 with a pair of runs scored. Ornelas, Veiga and LeFay all drove in runs as well.

Trevor Longfellow moved to 4-0 on the year after throwing the first 7.2 innings, allowing just two unearned runs on nine hits while striking out 10.

It will be a battle of the CCAA's best as Chico State rolls into San Bernardino for a four-game series, Friday through Saturday at Fiscalini Field.
