TURLOCK — Brandon Cunniff threw the first seven innings in the opener of a doubleheader, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out nine, but had a no decision as Cal State Stanislaus got a walk off grand slam in the 11th inning to win 5-1 over Cal State San Bernardino. The Warriors also took the nightcap 8-2.
The Coyotes fall to 11-5 overall and 11-4 in the CCAA and lose consecutive games for the first time this year. The Warriors moved to 9-9 overall and 6-5 in the CCAA.
Just like the day before, Cal State San Bernardino took an early lead in the top of the first at 1-0 in the opener.
Ethan Chapman reached with a leadoff walk before he scored on a Stanislaus error. The Warriors answered in the bottom of the third with a solo home run by Alex Zani Jr. to tie the game at 1-1.
The Coyotes three times had a runner 90 feet away, once in the fourth, fifth and ninth innings, but all three times were left stranded.
CSUSB again put a runner in scoring position in the top of the 11th when
Cody Madison singled to center and then moved to second on a CSUS error that also put
Darren Dworak at first with two outs. The Warriors though got a pop up on the infield for the final out of the inning.
In the bottom half of the 11th, the Warrior's Douglas Porras drew a walk and then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. The Coyotes intentionally walked Andrew Graves before Porras and Graves moved into scoring position with a wild pitch. CSUSB then intentionally walked John Canepa to load the bases before David Contreras delivered with a walk-of grand slam to end the game.
Andrew Schile (0-1) took the loss after throwing the final two innings of play.
Madison, Dworak,
Chris LeFay and
Kyle Davis were the only Coyotes to record hits. Matthew Winn drove in the only run of the game for the CSUSB.
In the nightcap, CSUSB again jumped out to an early lead at 1-0 in the top of the first. Chapman led off the game with a triple to right center before Madison drove him in with a sac fly. The Warriors answered in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1.
Stanislaus added three more in the bottom of the second, all unearned runs, to take a 4-1 lead. The Warriors scored another in the third and three more in the fourth to jump out to an 8-1 lead.
CSUSB did get one run back in the top of the sixth when Dworak doubled through the right side to score Madison.
Daniel Stenavich (2-2) took the loss after allowing four runs on four hits in the first inning and a third.
Chapman was 2-for-4 with a run scored in the nightcap while Dworak was 2-for-3 with an RBI. Madison had a hand in each run scored, by crossing the plate on one and driving in the other.
The four-game series comes to a close Sunday with a single game at 11 a.m.
