SAN BERNARDINO — Cal State San Bernardino took a step outside of California Collegiate Athletic Association play, Saturday, with a 15-3 win over Cal State San Marcos.
Darren Dworak and
Ryan Hulbert each went 3-for-4 on the day as Dworak scored three runs scored and drove in a run while Hulbert had three RBIs and two runs scored to lead the Coyotes (16-10).
Andrew Harrison went 3-for-5 at the plate with four RBIs and two runs scored.
The Cougars took the first lead of the game in the top of the second on a single to right center by Johnny Omahen to go up 1-0. The Coyotes answered back in the bottom half to tie the game at 1-1 on a double to left center by
Andrew Harrison.
Ethan Chapman then lifted a two-run home run to right field to put CSUSB up 3-1.
The Coyotes added two more in the third to lead 5-1. Dworak doubled to left field to score
Bryant Veiga before Dworak scored on a single up the middle by Hulbert.
Omahen cut it to 5-2 in the top of the fifth for the Cougars with an opposite field home run to right, but CSUSB tacked on five more runs in their at bats to lead 10-2.
Chris LeFay drove in the first run of the inning with a single before Hulbert roped a bases-loaded single through the right side to put CSUSB up 7-2.
Erik Ornelas then cleared the bases with a double to right center to give the Coyotes the eight-run lead.
The Cougars threatened in the top of the sixth with one out and the bases loaded, but the Coyotes turned a double to end the inning. Veiga added another run in the bottom of the sixth with his fifth home run of the year before Hulbert's RBI-single gave CSUSB a 12-2 advantage.
CSUSM made it 12-3 in the seventh, but the Coyotes got that run back and more with three runs in the eighth.
Brandon Cunniff (4-1) picked up the win, throwing two innings of relief after coming on for starter
Aaron Brooks. Each allowed one run on three hits. Brooks threw the first four innings of the game, striking out one.
Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State San Marcos play another single game Sunday at 11 a.m. at Poway High.
