Chapping the Toros Hide

The Coyotes outlasted CSU Dominguez Hills in a duel of two top 30 teams

Chapman is now tied for third in the CCAA with six home runs.

CARSON — Four different Coyotes hit home runs as No. 21 Cal State San Bernardino scored nine runs in the final five innings in an 11-5 win over No. 30 Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Ethan Chapman and Ryan Hulbert went a combined 5-for-10 with four RBIs and five runs scored as each hit a home run. Darren Dworak and Chris LeFay each hit a home run as well as the Coyotes (15-7, 15-6 CCAA) pounded out 15 hits.

Aaron Brooks (3-1) went the distance, allowing five runs on seven hits while fanning 10 in nine innings of work. The sophomore has struck out 24 over his last three outings.

Erik Ornelas and Dworak each went 2-for-5 as Ornelas drove in a run and scored a run as well. Dworak drove in three and scored a run. James Kono went 2-for-4 with a run scored.

The Toros quickly took a 3-0 lead with pair of home runs in the bottom of the first inning. Abel Medina hit a two-run bomb before Kevin Pillar hit a solo home run just two batters later.

The Coyotes got a run back in the top of the second when LeFay grounded into a double play to score Hulbert who singled to lead off the inning. CSUSB made it 3-2 in the top of the third when Chapman hit his team-leading sixth home run of the year.

Cal State San Bernardino broke the game open in the fifth with four runs to take a 6-3 lead. Ornelas ripped a one-out double to left center to score Chapman, who singled, before Cody Madison singled to right to drive home Ornelas, putting the Coyotes on top for the first time in the game. Hulbert then smashed his second home run of the season to score the final two runs of the inning.

CSUSB added another run in the sixth when Chapman laid down a squeeze bunt to score Kono from third to put the Coyotes up 7-3.

The Toros answered with two more runs in the sixth with a walk, a pair of singles and a groundout, to make it 7-5.

LeFay hit is fourth home run of the year in the top of the eighth to add another insurance run before Dworak put it away in the top of the ninth with a three-run home run to left center to put the Coyotes up 11-5.

The Coyotes and Toros go at it again Friday in Carson, Calif., at 3 p.m. before coming to Fiscalini Field for a series ending doubleheader at noon.
