SAN BERNARDINO — For the third time in five games, Cal State San Bernardino ventured into extra innings and unfortunately for the Coyotes the result was the same as the other two gams as CSUSB dropped an 8-5 extra-inning game to No. 10 Chico State.
The Coyotes (12-6, 12-5 CCAA) trailed 5-1 heading into the bottom of the fourth before Bryant Veiga led off the fourth with a single through the right side and Cody Madison hit his third home run of the season to pull CSUSB within two at 5-3.
CSUSB took advantage of Wildcat miscues to tie the game at 5-5 in the sixth and seventh innings. After leading off the sixth with a double through the right side, Madison advanced to third on a wild pitch. Darren Dworak smacked a single up the middle to score Madison. In the seventh, the Coyotes had Ethan Chapman at second and Matt Winn at first with one out. Chico State attempted to pick Winn off at first, but threw the ball into right field. The error allowed Chapman to come all the way around to score, tying the game.
After two scoreless innings forced extra innings, Chico State added three in the top of the 10th and held the Coyotes to end the game. The Wildcats opened the 10th with back-to-back singles before a sac bunt put runners in scoring position. The Coyotes intentionally walked the bases loaded before Andrew Schile (0-2) got the second out with a strike out. After a wild pitch scored the first run of the inning, Hunter Buckmore then laced a two-run single to left field to drive in the final two runs.
The Coyotes got a runner on first with one out in their half of the inning, but the Wildcats turned a double play to end the game.
The Coyotes actually took the first lead of the game at 1-0. Chapman walked, advanced to second on an Erik Ornelas sac bunt, and came home to score on a single up the middle by Winn.
The Wildcats took the lead in the second though. Jackson Evans doubled to right field and scored on a Adrian Bringas single. With one on base, Deven Braden hit a two-run home run to give the Wildcats a 3-1 lead. Chico State extended its lead to 5-1 in the third on a Kevin Seaver homer before the Coyotes rally to tie it at five.
