SAN BERNARDINO — While the ground has been soaking in all the rain in this early baseball season, Cal State San Bernardino has been soaking in the feeling of winning. CSUSB took its second straight California Collegiate Athletic Association series with an 8-6 win over No. 15 Sonoma State.

The Coyotes (7-2, 7-1 CCAA) swept Cal State Monterey Bay last week and took the series with the Seawolves (6-6, 1-3 CCAA), 3-1.

CSUSB never trailed the entire game after taking a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first.

Bryant Veiga drove in the first two runs of the game with a single up the middle and then Cody Madison hit a sacrifice fly to right to score Matthew Winn. The Coyotes added another in the second when Ethan Chapman hit his fourth home run of the year with a solo shot to right center with two outs.

The Seawolves got on the board in the top of the third with a run, but the Coyotes matched it, to lead 5-1, when Darren Dworak drove in Winn with a ground out to short. Winn reached on a walk before getting moved to third on another Veiga single up the middle.

Sonoma State cut the CSUSB lead to 5-4 with a run in the fourth and two in the fifth, but the Coyotes answered with two of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Winn led off with a double before Dworak drove him in with a single to right before Leland Sisco singled to left to score Dworak to put the Coyotes up 7-4.

The Seawolves got within one again at 7-6 with a pair of runs in the sixth that included a solo home run by Max Shupe.

The Coyotes added another insurance run in the eighth when Chapman ripped a double to center field that scored Chris LeFay.

Chapman went 3-for-4 on the day with two RBIs and two runs scored. Veiga went 2-for-4 with a pair of RBIs while Winn went 1-for-2 with three runs scored. Dworak also drove in a pair of runs.

Trevor Longfellow (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, throwing 5.2 innings. He allowed six runs on nine hits and struck out seven. Lucas Sanford recorded his first save as he threw the final 2.1 innings and struck out three.

The Coyotes now take on Cal State L.A. in a four-game series with games at Fiscalini Field Thursday and Friday and a doubleheader in Los Angeles, Saturday.
