LOS ANGELES — The best 3-point shooter in the conference lived up to her billing.
Krystal Urzua buried a 3-pointer with 3.3 seconds left to give Cal State San Bernardino a 60-59 win over Cal State L.A. Saturday night in the final road California Collegiate Athletic Association contest of the season.
The senior came into the night shooting 44.3 percent from beyond the arc and left shooting 44.7 percent after a 4-for-8 night from downtown. Urzua scored a team-high 18 points for the Coyotes (13-12, 9-11 CCAA) who are in a tie for seventh place with Cal State Dominguez Hills in the CCAA.
CSUSB led by as much as 17 (25-8) in the first half and held a 30-19 lead at intermission. The Golden Eagles cut it to five twice early in the second half, but the Coyotes pushed it back to a 10-point lead, at 44-34, with 13:49 left in the game.
Cal State San Bernardino led 49-40 with 9:08 left when CSULA's Jordan Kuzma sparked a 13-2 run to give the Golden Eagles their first lead at 53-51 with 6:07 left.
Kymberly Ooten tied it at 53 with a jumper, but Cal State L.A. answered with back-to-back buckets to lead 57-53.
Emily Vore hit the front end of a pair of free throws to make it 57-54 and then hit the back end of another set a free throws to make it 57-55 with 2:01 left. The Golden Eagles added another bucket, making it 59-55 before Urzua took over.
Urzua pulled the Coyotes within two at 59-57 with 1:10 left and after a missed shot by CSULA, Cal State San Bernardino had two chances to at least tie the game.
Amanda Ragains missed a jumper before an errant layup from
Lisa Takata went out of bounds back to CSUSB.
On the inbounds play, Urzua curled around a screen and put up a three over the screen that found the bottom of the net and capped the night for the Coyotes.
Ooten and Ragains each scored 10 points while Ooten pulled down a career-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Ooten also picked up three steals.
Lisa Takata was also just one assist shy of tying a season-high with six assists.
The Coyotes close out the regular season at home Thursday and Friday with games against San Francisco State and Cal State Monterey Bay.
