ROHNERT PARK — Krystal Urzua scored a game-high 15 points for Cal State San Bernardino in a 65-48 loss to Sonoma State.
The Seawolves' (10-12, 8-9 CCAA) Stephanie Barnes and Jaclyn Bisordi matched Urzua's game-high with 15 each as Sonoma State out scored the Coyotes (12-10, 8-9 CCAA), 39-23, in the second half. The loss brings Cal State San Bernardino and Sonoma State into a tie for sixth place in the conference.
Shannon Gholar added nine points for the Coyotes while
Ashlee Ford scored eight. Kelsey Wagner went 5-for-7 from the field for Sonoma State with 11 points and Christy Shreve scored 10.
CSUSB shot 37 percent (20-54) from the field and hit just 12.5 percent (3-24) from beyond the arc. The Coyotes also struggled at the line, going just 5-for-11. The Seawolves on the other hand hit 41.1 percent (23-56) from the field, 4-of-11 from downtown, and missed just one of their 16 free throw attempts.
The Seawolves doubled up CSUSB in the paint, scoring 28 points compare to just 14 by the Coyotes. More than half of those points, 15, came off of second chances. Of the 43 rebounds SSU pulled down, 13 came on the offensive end. The Coyotes grabbed just 28 boards with seven being offensive.
Neither team led by more than four in the first half and exchanged eight leads, three in the final three minutes of the half until a Barnes two, with 29 seconds left, gave the Seawolves a 26-25 lead at halftime.
The Seawolves went on a 19-5 run in the first 6:16 of the second half to lead 45-30 and the lead went back to single digits just once more after that. The Coyotes responded with sixth straight to cut the deficit to 45-36, but Shreve scored six points in a 16-2 run to give the Seawolves their biggest lead of the game at 61-38 with 5:24 left to play and held on for the win.
The Coyotes will now travel to Arcata, Calif., to take on Humboldt State for a 5:30 CCAA game Saturday.
