Humboldt State outscored Cal State San Bernardino 7-0 in the final two minutes of Friday night's CCAA conference women's basketball game to rally from behind for an 82-78 victory over the Coyotes before 286 fans in Coussoulis Arena.
Paige Peterson led the CCAA-leading Lumberjacks (9-2, 7-0 CCAA) with 21 points five assists and three steals. Kayla Wiliams had 18 points, six assists. Andrea Bobic scored 17 points and grabbed six rebounds and Brittney Taylor had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds along with six assists and two blocked shots.
The Coyotes (6-4, 2-3 CCAA) were led by junior center
Amanda Ragains with a season-best 19 points and 21 rebounds, the fifth best single-game rebound performance in the history of the program.
Kymberly Ooten scored 18 points on nine of 13 shooting and made three steals, but missed two free throws in the 30 seconds that could have tied the game at 80-all.
Krystal Urzua scored 13 of her 15 points in the second half and collected nine rebounds.
Ashlee Ford had 12 points and six assists for CSUSB.
The Coyotes host Sonoma State at 5:30 p.m. Saturday while the Lumberjacks head to Cal Poly Pomona.
CSUSB took an early 14-8 lead on a layup by Ford and were up 19-10 on a three-pointer by Ragains with 13:50 left in the first half. HSU pecked away at the lead and went ahead 23-22 on a layup by Peterson with 9:19 left to intermission.
After Kristen Huffman tied the game at 30-all with 5:21 left in the half, the 'Jacks outscored CSUSB 11-4 to take a 41-34 lead to the locker room.
A three-pointer by Williams gave Humboldt its biggest lead of the game at 49-39 with 17:14 remaining, but CSUSB asserted itself and outscored the 'Jacks 15-7 to pull within two points at 56-54 with 13:35 remaining on a three by Ford.
Urzua and Ford then hit back to back threes following a three-point play by Peterson and CSUSB was suddenly back in the lead at 60-59 with 12:14 left. A layup three minutes later by Vore gave the Coyotes a four-point lead at 67-64 with 9:04 left. Ooten's jumper at 7:54 made it 69-64 CSUSB.
However, the Lumberjacks rallied and took the lead 75-74 on a jumper by Peterson. Ooten responded with a bucket at the 3:18 mark for a 76-75 Coyotes lead and
Shannon Gholar scored on a layup for a 78-75 lead with 2:56 to go.
Peterson sank two free throws to close the gap to 78-77 and Taylor put HSU ahead 79-78 with a jumper with 1:11 left. Taylor added a free throw with 42 seconds left to make it 80-78.
Ooten then missed two free throws with 30 seconds left and Williams converted two charity tosses with 25 seconds left. Ragains and Urzua both misfired on three-pointers in the final 11 seconds.
The score was tied twice in the game and the lead changed hands 11 times.
CSUSB, normally a stingy defensive team, has yielded 160 points in outings against HSU and Chico State. The Coyotes shot 42 percent from the field (31 of 73) and 43 percent from the three (9 of 21) but made just 54 percent of their free throws (7 of 13).
Humboldt State shot 45 percent (33 of 73) and was six of 15 from beyond the arc (40 percent) and were just 50 percent from the line (10 of 20). CSUSB outrebounded Humboldt 53-42 but committed 20 turnovers to 12 for the 'Jacks.
