TURLOCK -- Cal State San Bernardino rallied from a four-point halftime deficit Sunday behind senior guard Krystal Urzua, breaking away from Cal State Stanislaus in the final eight minutes of the game to record a 75-66 victory over the Warriors in a CCAA women's basketball game in Warrior Gym.
Urzua scored a game-high 26 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, six of them on the offensive glass and was credited with three assists and three steals as CSUSB evened its conference record at 2-2 and improved to 6-3 on the season.
Cal State Stanislaus dipped to 0-4 in the conference and 1-7 overall despite solid performances from all-CCAA center Katie Busi (21 points, 16 rebounds) and Alishea Kelly (19 points, 10 rebounds).
Backing up Urzua's play were senior guard Ashlee Ford (12 points and five assists), sophomore center Emily Vore (10 points, four rebounds) and junior forward Kymberly Ooten (nine points, five rebounds). CSUSB outscored the Warriors 44-31 in the second half.
The Coyotes shot 38 percent from the field (23 of 60) and 36 percent from three-point land (eight of 22) and improved on their free throw shooting, making 21 of 30 (70 percent). Stanislaus hit just 31 percent of its shots and were just two of 16 from the three (12 percent).
Trailing by four points starting the second half, CSUSB caught up with the Warriors at 38-all with 16:29 left in the game and took a brief lead at 41-40 with 14:24 left on a free throw by Ooten.
The teams were still tied at 53-all with 8:06 remaining but CSUSB went on an 11-4 run to take a 64-57 lead on a Vore jumper with 4:26 left. A Ford free throw at 4:08 gave the Coyotes a 65-57 advantage and Urzua drained a three-pointer for a 68-59 lead with 3:31 left. Two free throws by junior guard Lisa Takata sealed the deal at 70-59 with 1:31 remaining.
Urzua was 10 of 18 from the field and four of seven from beyond the arc after an 11 point performance in Saturday's 78-51 loss at Chico State.
The Coyotes return home to face Humboldt State on Friday night at 5:30 p.m. in Coussoulis Arena.
