Senior third baseman
Jesus Beltran probably wishes Cal State San Bernardino could play all its games at Fiscalini Field, known locally as "the launching pad."
Beltran drilled two home runs and drove in five runs Friday as the Coyotes defeated San Francisco State 12-7 to improve to 20-23 on the season and 14-18 in the CCAA conference. The Gators, sitting behind the Coyotes in ninth place in the CCAA, are now 14-30 overall and 7-26 in the conference.
The Coyotes banged out 19 hits off three SFSU pitchers to help No. 1 starter
Daniel Stenavich pick up his fifth win of the season against one loss. Stenavich, not as sharp as in some of his previous outings, gave up five runs on nine hits in seven innings while striking out five.
Spencer Kreisberg (1-5) gave up six runs on nine hits to take the loss for the Gators.
Matt Memeo rocked Stenavich with a mammoth three-run homer over the scoreboard in right in the top of the first but Stenavich gave up just two runs on six hits after that while his teammates fought their way back to a tie and then took the lead for good in the fifth.
Beltran,
Johnnie Haas and
Julio Torres each had three hits on the day as every starter in the Coyote lineup got at least one hit.
After Memeo's blast, CSUSB got two runs in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly by
Brent Planck and an RBI single by Beltran. The Coyotes tied the game in the second, 3-3, when they loaded the bases with nobody out and
Chris Olsen scored as
Andrew Tapia hit into a double play, one of four that the Gators turned in the game.
The game was tied at 4-4 in the bottom of the fifth when Haas singled and Beltran drilled his ninth home run of the season over the 342-foot sign in left to give CSUSB a lead it woudl not relinquish.
San Bernardino made it 9-5 in the seventh, scoring three runs on a runs-scoring double by
Cody Madison, a run-scoring groundout by
Jordan Lowe and an RBI single by
Kyle Davis.
Three more runs came across in the eighth as Haas tripled to lead off the frame and Beltran followed with his 10th homer, this one to center field. Tapia then singled in a run after Torres and Olsen had singled following the home run.
SFSU picked up two runs in the ninth on a two-run double by Nick Nyman off reliever
Chad Borowski.
The loss gives the Gators a 2-15 road record after they had won five of their last seven CCAA contests. The Coyotes snapped a three-game losing streak after having won just two of their last 12 CCAA games to drop into eighth place in the conference.
