LOS ANGELES -- In the first game, the Cal State San Bernardino Coyotes were rocked. In the second game, they were robbed.
Cal State L.A., ranked 15th in NCAA Division II, pounded CSUSB pitching for a 12-3 win in the opening game of their CCAA doubleheader Saturday at Reeder Field on the CSULA campus.
Then, Mario Ramirez hit a grand slam, walk-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning to erase a 6-2 CSUSB lead and spoil a terrific outing by Coyotes starter
Aaron Brooks for a 7-6 Golden Eagles win in the nightcap.
The twin losses dropped the Coyotes to 13-12 overall and 9-7 in the CCAA while Cal State L.A. improved to 18-9 overall and 11-5 in the conference.
Game two was a bitter pill to swallow for the Coyotes. CSUSB had the seven-inning game under control until the bottom of the seventh.
Spotting the Golden Eagles a 2-0 lead in the second, the Coyotes took a 3-2 lead in the third on a three-run home run by
Jesus Beltran off CSULA starter Yuichiro Fujiwara and went up 4-2 on
Andrew Tapia's first home run of the season in the fourth. A potential fifth run, in the form of
Chris Olsen, was thrown out at the plate after
Kyle Davis singled.
The Coyotes added two more runs in the top of the seventh on a leadoff home run by
Johnnie Haas and a one-out home run by
Jordan Lowe to take a 6-2 lead into the bottom of the seventh with Brooks sailing along.
Two singles sandwiched around an out spelled the end for Brooks, who was replaced by Ian O'Conner, who earned a save in Thursday's 5-4 win over L.A. in San Bernardino.
However, O'Conner walked a batter to load the bases, then walked another batter to force in a run to make it 6-3. After O'Conner struck out a pinch hitter, Mario Ramirez stepped in and belted his walk-off grand slam to right center, plating four runs for a 7-6 win.
Brooks gave up four runs and O'Connor was credited with the last three.
Davis went 3-for-4 and Beltran was 2-for-4 with three RBI and
Omar Manzanarez was 2-for-3 in the 11-hit Coyotes attack. Ramirez was 3-for-4 for L.A., which had only eight hits off Brooks and O'Connor.
In the opener, CSUSB went up 2-0 in the second when
Julio Torres tripled to drive in
Cody Madison who had doubled to right. Torres then scored on a passed ball.
The Golden Eagles jumped on CSUSB starter
Erick Carrillo for nine hits and 10 runs, four of which were unearned -- scoring six in the third and four in the fourth. The six-run third was highlighted by a bases-clearing double by Max Moya and a two-run homer by Travis Tartamella.
Eric Quintero's two-run single keyed a four-run L.A. fourth.
Torres drove in CSUSB's final run in the ninth on a sacrifice fly. He was 2-for-3 in the game with two RBI as three L.A. pitchers limited the Coyotes to just seven hits in the contest while striking out six.
Nathan Pickett (2-0) got the win while Carrillo (3-3) took the loss.
