Coyotes women win opener, 76-62

Urzua scores 29, Ooten 16 in home victory over Hope International

Krystal Urzua opens season with 29-point effort against Hope International
   Senior guard Krystal Urzua bombed in 29 points and junior forward Kymberly Ooten made her debut with 16 points and nine rebounds as Cal State San Bernardino defeated Hope International, 76-62, Tuesday night in the Coyotes basketball home opener in Coussoulis Arena.
    The Coyotes, 1-0, will host San Diego Christian in another non-conference game at 5:30 p.m. Saturday in Coussoulis Arena. The Royals are now 2-3 on the season. 
    Urzua, the team's career and single-season three-point record holder, made seven of 12 from beyond the arc and 10 of 19 overall from the field while collecting five rebounds in 40 minutes action. 
    Ooten was a dynamo on the offensive glass with seven of her nine rebounds coming on missed CSUSB shots. The transfer from Riverside Community College hit seven of 14 from the floor in 26 minutes. 
    Champ Hood led the Royals with 15 points on seven of 12 shooting, mostly in the key area, and five rebounds, while guard Lindsay Salazar finished with 13 points, nine of them coming of free throws. She had three assists and a steal as well. 
    The Coyotes defense limited Sara Lycans-Roy to just six points and four rebounds. She entered the game averaging a double-double with over 11 points and 11 rebounds a game. 
    Hope hit 45 percent of its shots (19 of 42) and made 20 of 28 free throws while the active Coyotes shot just 39 percent (27 of 70) and hit 42 percent from beyond the arc (10 of 24). 
    Senior point guard Ashlee Ford had a game-high seven assists and five steals in 27 minutes. Reserve point guard Lisa Takata had four assists in 13 minutes. Lauren Salazar had five assists for the Royals. 
    The Royals had the edge in points in the paint 26-22 but CSUSB outscored them 18-8 on points off turnovers. The Coyotes scored 30 second-chance points to only 11 for the Royals.
CSUSB led 38-33 at the half. 
    The Coyotes built an 11-point lead at 49-38 on a three by Urzua with 13:13 left in the game but the Royals rallied to close the gap to five at 49-44 on a pair of free throws by Sarah Nylander with 11:53 to go. 
    Urzua drained two more threes to regain the 11-point advantage at 55-44 with 9:49 remaining. Ooten's jumper with 8:04 left upped the lead to 13 at 59-46. A pair of free throws by Ooten kept the margin at 13, 65-52 with 4:25 left and Hope never got closer than nine points the rest of the way.
