Coyotes women tie No. 4 Seattle Pacific, 1-1

Lyons saves 10 shots; Haagsma scores equalizer for CSUSB

Laura Lyons makes career-high 10 saves in 1-1 tie with Seattle Pacific
SEATTLE -- Cal State San Bernardino more than held its own against 2007 NCAA Division II semifinalist and currently fourth-ranked Seattle Pacific Thursday night, battling the favored Falcons to a 1-1 tie in double overtime in the regular season opener for both teams.
The Coyotes went ahead 1-0 in the 23rd minute on sophomore midfielder Ashley Haagsma's first collegiate goal and made it stand up until the Falcons' Jocelyn Charette headed a ball into the net off a set play in the 78th minute to knot the score.
The teams played through two scoreless 10-minute overtimes to finish deadlocked.
Coyotes junior goalkeeper Laura Lyons was a tour de force in the net, making a career high 10 saves. SPU was credited with 19 shots in the match, 11 of them on goal while CSUSB was credited with only four shots on goal, three of them saved by the Falcons' Jesslyn Rahm.
"Our goal was one of the best I've ever seen in women's soccer," said Coyotes Head Coach Diego Bocanegra. There were some great passes before Haagsma hit a slider into the net from five yards out. Freshman Mackenzie Dill was credited with an assist on the play.
"Laura made at least four great saves in the first half or we could have been down three or four goals," Bocanegra said.
The Coyotes travel south from Seattle to Lacey, Wash., for a noon Saturday clash with Saint Martin's University before flying home to host Dixie State on Sept. 6.
