LA MIRADA, Calif. - California State University San Bernardino women's soccer fell to Biola University 1-0 on Saturday night in a non-conference contest at Al Barbour Field.
With the loss, the Coyotes move to 1-2-1 overall on the season.
Play went back and forth throughout the opening 45 minutes, with both teams finishing the half with nine shots. Biola held the edge in shots on goal, putting eight on frame compared to two for CSUSB.
CSUSB came out of halftime creating more chances. Maya Alston put back-to-back shots on goal in the 54th minute, while Jackie Fuentes came close in the 66th when her attempt went just over the crossbar.
Biola scored the lone goal of the match in the 80th minute. After CSUSB pushed forward in the attack, the Eagles broke on the counter and played a through ball in behind the Yotes' defense before finishing the chance for a 1-0 lead.
CSUSB finished the night with a 23-17 edge in shots, while Biola held an 11-6 advantage in shots on goal. Maya Alston and Jackie Fuentes led the Yotes with four shots apiece.
Making her Yotes debut in goal, senior Bella Ortiz finished with 10 saves, including eight in the first half. Although Biola broke through late, Ortiz put together a strong performance and kept CSUSB within striking distance throughout the night.
The Yotes now get ready for CCAA play as they return home to host San Francisco State on Friday, September 18 at noon at Premier Field.
