COSTA MESA, Calif. - California State University San Bernardino women's soccer picked up its first win of the season Thursday afternoon, defeating Vanguard 3-0 in a non-conference matchup at the Vanguard University Soccer Complex.
With the win, the Yotes move to 1-0-1 on the young season.
The Yotes opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Angelyn Pena sent a cross into the box, where Raylene Alcaraz poked the ball to her left before colliding with the Vanguard goalkeeper. Reagan Parkhill was there to finish the loose ball, putting CSUSB ahead 1-0.
CSUSB doubled its lead in the 28th minute on a play started and finished by Ruby Segura. Segura helped build the attack before the ball eventually found Alcaraz inside the box. Alcaraz cut toward goal from a tight angle and fired a shot off the post, with Segura following the play and putting away the rebound to make it 2-0.
The Yotes carried the 2-0 advantage into halftime after outshooting Vanguard 7-5 in the opening 45 minutes.
Coming out of the break, San Bernardino added its third goal in the 67th minute. Maya Alston dribbled down the right side and sent a ball into the box over the Vanguard defenders, where freshman Graciella Baird finished the play for the first goal of her collegiate career.
CSUSB finished with a 16-10 advantage in shots and put seven attempts on goal while holding Vanguard to just two.
Freshman goalkeeper Austyn Brooks stopped both shots she faced to record the first shutout of her collegiate career for the Coyotes.
CSUSB will continue their season-opening road trip on Saturday, taking on Concordia University Irvine at 6:30 p.m.
