TURLOCK -- Jacob Thelen drove in pinch-runner Tomas Donnelly with a double in the bottom of the ninth inning Friday to give Cal State Stanislaus a come-from-behind, 5-4, victory over Cal State San Bernardino in a CCAA conference baseball game at Warriors Field.
The victory improved the Warriors', ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 26 in the nation, to 23-8 on the season and 15-2 in the CCAA, while the Coyotes are now 13-17 overall and 4-13 in the CCAA.
The two teams will play a doubleheader at noon on Saturday.
CSUSB got off on the right foot with a run in the top of the first on a single by
Johnnie Haas and a run-scoring triple by
Jason Klug off Warriors' starter Andrew Stueve.
After the Warriors picked up two runs on two hits and a Coyotes error in the home half of the first to take a 2-1 lead, CSUSB tied the score in the second on doubles by
Drew Valenzuela and
Justin Watson.
The Coyotes took a 3-2 lead in the fifth on a double by
Brent Planck and Klug's single up the middle.
CSUSB made it 4-2 in the seventh on Planck's home run off Stueve who yielded all four runs and nine hits while striking out six before leaving the game in favor of Josh Lewis in the eighth.
Stanislaus tied the game up at 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh off hard-luck CSUSB starter
Kevin Wilson on three hits with David Contreras driving in the tying run with a single. Wilson gave up eight hits and two earned runs while striking out five and wound up with no decision.
CSUSB had two runners on with one out in the eighth but Lewis and the Warriors third pitcher, Andrew Demont (2-0) struck out
Chris Olsen and Watson to end the threat.
The Coyotes went out in order against Demott in the ninth, setting the stage for Thelen's heroics in the bottom of the ninth. The game-winning hit came off Coyotes reliever
Michael Leal (1-3).
Planck was two-for-five with two runs scored and an RBI while Klug was two-for-four with two RBI. Watson was two-for-four (both doubles) and drove in a run for CSUSB.
