CARSON -- Senior
Jamie Lowe's RBI double capped an eight-run inning for Cal State San Bernardino and it proved to be the winning run as Cal State San Bernardino won the second game of Saturday's CCAA softball doubleheader, 8-7, over host Cal State Dominguez Hills.
The Toros won the first game, 7-3. The teams split their four games 2-2. CSUSB is now 4-5-1 overall and 2-2 in the CCAA as they face perennial NAIA power Cal Baptist at 1 p.m. on Monday in Riverside.
Four Toros errors contributed to the big inning for CSUSB in the nightcap. The Coyotes batted around and Lowe got two hits in the inning and scored a run in addition to driving in
Debbie Shisler with two out to give CSUSB an 8-4 lead at the time.
The two teams committed nine errors between them resulting in 11 unearned runs of the 15 scored in the game.
Lowe went 3-for-4 in the game and made four putouts at second base.
Senior right-hander
Tawni Baker went 6.2 innings, yielding nine hits and seven runs, only two of them earned before
Jackie Jacob came on in relief as the Toros threatened to snatch victory from defeat by scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh. However, Jacob got Kristin Tanaka to ground out for the final out of the game, stranding a potential tying run on second base.
It was the third win for Baker (3-3).
Former CSUSB pitcher Regina Farfan pitched a complete game for the Toros in the opener while the Toros shelled Coyotes starter
Cassidy Lee for six runs on six hits in 4.1 innings, only four of which were earned. Shisler pitched the final 1.2 innings, giving up two hits and an unearned run.
CSUSB's defense committed eight errors on the day.
Joleen Batista tripled and drove in two runs for the Coyotes while Shisler was 2-for-3 in the seven-hit Coyotes attack. Farfan homered and drove in two runs to support her team at the plate.
