Coyotes hold off Broncos for 5-4 victory

Hann pitches two-hitter for 8 innings; CSUSB now 5-0

POMONA -- Senior right-hander Cheyne Hann held Cal Poly Pomona in check for eight innings, working on a two-hitter, but the Coyotes had to withstand a big rally in the ninth by the Broncos to win their fifth straight game, 5-4, at Scolinos Field on the Pomona campus.
The Coyotes, 5-0, will host Colorado State-Pueblo for a pair of games -- Friday at 2 p.m. and Saturday at 4 p.m. -- at Arrowhead Credit Union Park. The Broncos, 0-4 thus far, will play the  Thunderwolves at noon on Saturday at ACUP.
The outing was Hann's best since he joined the ballclub as a junior in 2007. He didn't walk a batter and struck out seven while facing just 27 batters and had a shutout working until the bottom of the eighth when Pomona got a run on a double, a ground ball out and a sacrifice fly.
The Coyotes offense slumbered, getting only four hits off five Pomona pitchers made the most of them.
CSUSB grabbed a 3-0 lead in the top of the first as Johnnie Haas reached base on an error and motored all the way to third. After Danny Soles walked, Brent Planck drove in Haas with a single as Soles moved to third. Jason Klug then picked up his ninth RBI of the season as Soles scored on his ground ball out to second with Planck advancing to third on the play. Kyle Walton then scored Planck with a ground ball out.
Hann retired the first 11 batters he faced before giving up a single to A.J. Cavaletto with two out in the fourth. It would the last hit off him until the bottom of the eighth.
CSUSB made it 5-0 in the seventh on an RBI single by Haas before reliever Sheldon McGregor walked Klug with the bases loaded to force in what proved to be the winning run.
In the eighth, Pomona's Terry Mermer led off with a double and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Jeff Ringholm, the only blemish on Hann's performance.
However, in the bottom of the ninth, the Broncos got two runs off sophomore reliever Chad Borowski and a third run off closer Ward Minich to make it close. Cavaletto hit a two-run homer off Borowski. Minich came in and gave up a double to Josh Potter and Chris Wilson followed with a single to drive in Potter. to make it 5-4. However, Minich enduced Mermer to fly out to left and then struck out Ben Lebovitz to end the game and record his third save of the season.
