Coyotes, Eagles split softball twinbill

CSUSB wins game one, 7-4, with 14-hit attack; Baker gets victory No. 2

Coyotes Head Coach Tacy Duncan talks to her team between games.
Senior right-hander Tawni Baker scattered five hits while striking out six as Cal State San Bernardino used a 14-hit attack to defeat Concordia University Irvine, 7-4, Tuesday in the first game of their non-conference softball doubleheader at Coyote Park.
Concordia came back to win the nightcap, 3-2, as the Eagles' Rachel Reekstin bested CSUSB's Jackie Jacob in a pitcher's duel separated by an unearned run scored by CUi. The Coyotes are now 2-3-1 on the season while the Eagles are 2-2.
In the opener, the Coyotes jumped on Eagles starter Laura Wiens for four runs in the first inning, propelled by a two-run triple by sophomore Ashley Collinwood and RBI singles by freshman Priscilla Curiel and senior Nicole Camarena.
The lead became 7-0 in the third as Collinwood doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jordan Dahl. Jamie Lowe walked with the bases loaded to force in another run and Curiel knocked in another run with her second hit of the game.
A two-run double by Ashley Alvarez in the fifth and a two-out, two-run homer by Caitlyn Sinkbeil in the seventh off Baker got the Eagles their four runs, only two of which were earned. Curiel, Collinwood and Camarena each had three hits for the Coyotes in the game.
In game two, Concordia pulled ahead 2-0 with solo runs in the first and second innings off CSUSB starter Jackie Jacob (0-1). Sinkbeil's triple in the first drove home Alvarez who had walked to open the game. In the second, Tiana King reached base on an error, stole second  and scored the unearned run on Lauren Hastings single.
The deciding run for Concordia came in the fourth when Isabel Chavez singled, stole second and third and came home on another hit by Hastings.
CSUSB made it 3-1 in its half of the fourth with Tori Beaudette doubled home Dahl. The Coyotes made it 3-2 in the fifth when catcher Sara Bird singled in a run.
Reekstin (1-0) gave up five hits and struck out four while walking one in her complete game effort. Jacob allowed just six hits in her seven innings of  work. Sinkbeil and Hastings each had two hits for the visitors.
The Coyotes open CCAA conference play Friday and Saturday at Cal State Dominguez Hills with a pair of doubleheaders starting at 1 p.m. Friday and 11 a.m. Saturday.
